A Democratic aide says a new provision in the health care bill will require businesses to count part-time workers when calculating penalties for failing to provide coverage.

The bill originally passed by the Senate only penalized businesses for full-time workers who weren't covered. The Senate bill is being used as the basis for a final package President Barack Obama wants Congress to pass in the next few weeks.

If this is true, there the sunk costs of hiring a part time worker just exploded. You young ones, good luck finding a part time job in the future.

Interesting. Will temp agencies also be required to provide health insurance?

Don’t think contract or temp employees wil be exempt!

Either their contracting agency or you will be required to count them and pay the ‘penalty’

No, they’ll just do what Hawaii employers do, where 20 hours a week is considered “full time.” They hire folk for 19 hours a week over the counter, 21 hours under. Or they do “independent contracts.”

"A Democratic aide says a new provision in the health care bill ..."

Ummmm... wouldn't a "new" provision in the bill cause the bill to have to go back to the Senate for the full 60 votes?

I would like to see the language in the bill to make sure that it isn't written in such a way to include contract and temp workers as "part-time".

The only way Obama is trustworthy is that he can always be trusted to stick it to small business owners.

We will be a nation of contractors and day workers or something, just like the 3rd world hell hole to our south.

although I do get this strange feeling that if you allow a union to organize your part-time workers there will be an escape hatch provided for you

“Code Red” - House Target List on Health Care
The National Republican Congressional Committee has published a target list on health care. In addition to continuing to contact the five Tennessee Democrat Congressmen, you can go http://www.votervoice.net/link/clickthrough/ext/94697.aspx to contact some of these targets. Much of the talk following Obama’s announcement has focused on how to defeat this second bill through reconciliation, but that is misleading because the first step to defeating Obamacare is not by concentrating on defeating the “fixer” bill but by defeating the Senate bill in the House when it goes to the floor for an up-or-down vote on Thursday, March 18th.

I just started a new business and when the need arises I will only hire contract or temp employees.

You will still pay for their benefits.
