US PRESIDENT Barack Obama is under pressure from colleagues in his own party to ditch the revised trip to Australia, Indonesia and Guam because they fear it will torpedo their landmark healthcare bill.

After eight months of struggle, Mr Obama and backers in his Democratic Party are battling to gain enough support to pass the healthcare legislation.

Friday is viewed as a crucial deadline, but with 26 House Democrats still wavering on the reform there is talk a final vote may not take place until early April.

Mr Obama summoned some of the wavering lawmakers to the White House yesterday for face-to-face discussions.

"For the first time in eight months the President is finally getting his hands dirty, and now he's going to hop on the plane? Please," a Democratic congressman, requesting anonymity, told the Politico.com website.

Another unnamed Democrat said: "This trip is really getting in the way of things."

They don't have the votes!

Let's keep stretching it out. The more time that is spent on this, the fresher it will be in the voters minds in November and the less damage that can be done with the other ideas in the pipeline.

Sounds like they are looking for an excuse for their failure.

I have suspicioned for some days that he will ‘not be able to go to Australia” - and will find an excuse. This may be the smoke screen for it.

I'm sure he is seething at PM Rudd, who has dissed him but good...and succinct. The best put down ever.

What is the purpose of this trip anyway?

Another fling in Air Force 1 ....with no appreciable results for the USA?

He hasn’t left the USA since December. That is a record for him. Three months took a toll on him. I don’t think he can stand much more time here.

Maybe hotter, but the real hell is more tortuous that anything we can imagine.

I wonder how many actual days this fool has worked (not campaigned) since taking office.

Which ‘trip’ is that?

If Australian one, I’d say don’t “break a leg”!

This is all very odd.

Indonesia is welcoming him and he is going to take this trip at the critical moment of the healthcare debate.

He’s looking tired and drawn, is smoking and drinking too much.

He’s screwing Israel over, thus doing us in.

Where’s the indication that Aussies want him to go there? Obama seems the anthesis of everything good about that country—and the aborigines there seem infinitely more admirable.

I can’t imagine the Aussies, who have taken some pretty tough stances on Muslims and immigration, are all that interested in welcoming him anyway.

We’re not. We have no idea what he’s coming here for - and don’t really care!
