One Thing That's 100% Guaranteed: The Healthcare Bill Will NEVER Be Repealed

Joe Weisenthal
Mar. 22, 2010, 9:36 AM

Already Republicans plan on introducing a bill this week to repeal last night's historic healthcare vote.

Obviously that's going nowhere.

But looking out, Republicans will probably try to run on repeal in the runup until November. It's possible that will play okay at the ballot (we don't know) but anyone who thinks this is a realistic prospect is smoking something illegal.

First of all, to repeal the vote would be just as difficult legislatively as passing healthcare was, so just think of how hard that was. Republicans would need 60 pro-repeal votes in the Senate to defeat a Democratic filibuster. And remember, they'd need a President who wouldn't veto the bill (i.e. not Obama or any Democrat).

But even that's putting too fine a point on it. Here's the real story, and it gets down to the fact that this new bureaucratic superstructure is now permanently ossified into our federal government.

“There’s just no way to repeal benefits. Even if people don’t seem to like the new plan, there’s no way a politician successfully runs on some combination of: let’s go back to when insurance companies could exclude you for pre-existing conditions and let’s go back to when your kid gets kicked off your healthcare plan the moment he or she gets out of college.”

A lot of people thought they were entitled to their slaves as property.

A lot of people thought the States were entitled to Senators (appointed by the States, not elected).

A lot of people thought they were entitled to all their wages (till the income tax and social security)

A lot of people thought they were entitled to Social Security at age 65 till they changed the age.

A lot of people thought they were entitled to alcoholic beverages and recreational drugs of choice.

A lot of people thought they were entitled to ownership of their real estate till the Kelo decision.

A lot of people thought they were entitled to Medicaid and Medicare until the cuts.

As far as “let’s go back”, we don’t have to go back to what it was and shouldn’t.

We should do better.

That includes asking questions like:

Why shouldn’t an insurance company exclude someone who never bothered with insurance till they needed expensive medical care?

Why should an insurance company be allowed to exclude someone who has a pre-exisiting condition but had insurance they had to leave behind with a job change or a move or something legitimate?

Why should so much of our health insurance be provided through employers? Why shouldn’t we get the money they contribute and then purchase our own health insurance, ultimately getting the health care we deserve even if it kills us.

And there are a whole slew of other questions to be addressed.

Well, all this tough talk is fine and dandy...but we also said the bill would never pass...but it did.

But then, it should have passed a long time ago, insofar as the left has had a considerable plurality in Congress for a long time...and still it only passed by three votes. Three stinkin' votes - three traitor democrats put us out of having the greatest healthcare in the world, to third-world, socialized medicine.

The implied power of this bill will elevate obama and his czar-clan to unprecedented heights, as they use the far-reaching tentacles of the bill to control every facet of Americans lives.

This "healthcare reform" bill should be more aptly named, "The Dictatorship Enablement Bill of 2010", because that is exactly what it does. The Kenyan need not mount a military coup, he is defacto dictator by having this bill as the club needed to bludgeon the American people into slavery.

But there is one of those "unintended consequences" that the libs are so famous for and it is:

The healthcare "benefits" don't kick in for four years, however, the exhorbitant taxes for it kick in right away; the insurance companies will either try to fight it, or start to fold up their tents and go away; over 49% of doctors have said they will leave the profession if obamacare passes.

So, where do we get insurance and health care for the next four years until obamacare kicks in?

The insurance companies will surely go into duck-and-cover mode and be very picky about who they cover (if anyone), and what they cover. They will be highly selective of new customers - if any - and forget about it if you have preexisting conditions, such as chronic hangnails or seed-warts...you won't get any.

Employers will stop offering insurance as a benefit to control their costs - which will necessarily increase with this dinosaur of a bill lingering over their heads. Or, they will just lay off more people.

The doctors will stop taking on any new patients and start worrying about their survival after obmacare-2014. The ones who are left will be the ones who remove the wrong leg in surgery, you know, the ones obama used as examples of "bad healthcare".

The estimated premiums for obamacare have been put at about $12,000 per year for a family...that's $1,000 per month out of the family budget. That is IN ADDITION TO whatever medical insurance and expenses must be maintained until "obamacare" kicks in in 2014.

I understand there are "minority provisions" in the bill...so if you think you will be "first in line" at the doctors office...think again.

Remember, the same people who deliver your mail and process your automobile titles will be in charge of WHO gets to see the doc.

This law is going to be the biggest boondoggle to ever hit this planet; Americas have a deep, abiding sense of liberty and independence and do not like socialism. Some think they like it, as they have been promised cradle to grave freebies, but like all of obama's promises, that one too, is pure B.S.

Socialism has never worked...anywhere. Only progressives in America think they are smart enough to "do it right".

America will be like that TV show, "Life After People", except it will be "America After obama"...and we'll watch it crumble before our very eyes.

Not enough hell was raised about this bill...Washington should have been shoulder to shoulder with Americans holding torches and pitchforks...but again, we chickened out.

We have been beaten by a skinny black kid from Kenya...no armies were needed, no bombs, no tanks.....just lies took us down because a segment of our society are lazy rabble on the take.

But, obamacare wasn't out demise...our slide into oblivion started with civil rights, then special rights, then political correctness...and here we are...now paid back in full for slavery...as we all now become slaves.

And finally, this "victory" will greatly empower the progressives, so look for "cap and trade" to again rear its ugly head, along with immigration amnesty, and a host of other tax and control measures.

And what can we do? Nothing! The kenyan has created the perfect storm; he has congress at his beck and call, he has his czars and has ordered new riot guns for the IRS...which will become his Gestappo.

If I was a person of means, I would be off to Costa Rica or somewhere to wait out this coming storm...it's not going to be pretty...and the people are too enthralled with 3D TV to give it a moments notice.

Perhaps when they get their first $1,000 premium notice and their first $1200 electric bill, they might say, "WTF?"...but by then, it will be too late...if it's not already.

The general premise of this article is correct, but the rationale is wrong.

This huge leap in the Federal intrusion into the health care system will never be repealed because -- contrary to all of the posturing over the last few months -- both Democrats and Republicans are 100% on board with it.

The purpose of this whole charade was to get the Federal government to pick up a bigger chunk of a major expense that is currently being carried by private industry. You will NEVER get enough money and political momentum to go back on this.

If you need any evidence of this, just remember that the stupid Medicare prescription drug program from 2003/2004 was passed by a GOP-controlled House and a GOP-controlled Senate . . . and signed into law by a Republican president.

This kind of defeatist, loser talk isn't helpful. Back in the 1980's, people were same thing about welfare, and look what happened.

A Republican Congress does not have to fund this monstrosity. They do not have to fund the salaries of the additional IRS agent. They can also repeal the tax increases.

Well times are changing people are waking up...Look at the polls today in newspapers people hate this...we take back the senate and house one seat at a time...There is no reason the people can not get a majority in both house by 2012 and repeal it in 2013

Your analysis is correct. Legislative repeal is virtually impossible even with a GOP President. It would have to come through the courts and Obama will likely get two or three more appointees to the Supremes before he goes.

The same arguments were made about McCain/Feingold. It’s there in name only. The guts of it have been taken out and done away with.

The title of the thread (and the underlying article) concerns Congressional "repeal" not judicial "gutting." I agree there is a really good chance that the SCOTUS will eventually invalidate large portions of the law before it actually goes into effect, and as result, the remaining portions will be meaningless. The big question is whether a judge will issue a preliminary injunction barring the tax increases that go into effect immediately while the constitutional issues work through the court system.

As for repeal by act of Congress -- It's not going to happen, not as long as we have the likes of Collins, Snow, Graham, and McLame on our side.

Right -- but keep in mind that there are major implications of what I've written here . . . along with some of the points raised in the article.

Repealing this monstrosity in 2013 will result in a situation where employers no longer provide medical insurance for their employees as a matter of course. This is the beauty of a government-run health care system, as far as all the CEOs of major U.S. companies are concerned. Uncle Sam takes on the responsibility of managing this huge cost for them . . . and any repeal of the bill sure as hell is not going to force these companies to go back to what was the norm up until today.

Repealing this bill in 2013 will not put U.S. employers back in the business of providing medical insurance for their workers . . . it will simply mean that people will be forced to pay their own medical bills. I can guarantee you that many of these "outraged" people who are supposedly "waking up" right now will be adamantly opposed to any attempt to do such a thing.

I don’t think we are going to have to repeal it, it will be knocked down as unconstitutional.

I agree with this post’s premise, this won’t be repealed.

The constitutionality of the mandates will be successfully challenged in court, however, the new taxes, subsidies, controls, and regulations will stay in place.

Also given the market’s big bounce today, I think I have to admit to myself at this point that, that my distaste for the bill puts me in a minority.

See my comments in #104 and #107. The U.S. stock market loves this bill -- and for good reason.

I'm suprised at the markets but, they're off their highs so far. See here.

Exactly right. THAT is why the Dem leadership was willing to risk losing Congress and the White House over this bill. They knew it would never be repealed. Imagine running as a Republican against the bleating media who will accuse you of “taking away heath care!”. Same with Social Security and Medicaid. There is only one way to cure this, and it’s not through elections. Not anymore.

Often the greatest victories sow the seeds for the worst defeats.

Obama and the entire Democrat Party have exposed themselves for what they are-left wing thugs

They may not recover for an entire generation.

Just as the Kanas-Nebraska act destroyed the Northern Democrat Party, this will destroy the Democrat Party in the South and West.

They said the Stamp Act would never be repealed either.

What, are you saying it may be time to refresh the Tree of Liberty?
