(CNSNews.com) Representative Michael Burgess (R-Texas) told CNSNews.com that if the mandate in the health care law requiring individuals to purchase health insurance or be penalized is upheld by the courts, the federal government could mandate anything, such as requiring all Americans to purchase a General Motors car.
On Capitol Hill, CNSNews.com asked Representative Burgess, The Congressional Budget Office has said that never before in the history of the United States has the federal government mandated that any one buy a specific good or service and, of course, the bill includes the individual mandate. Is there a part of the Constitution that you think gives Congress the authority to mandate individuals to purchase health insurance?

No thanks. I drive a Toyota.
I’ll keep my Toyota.
FUB0!!
I think Social Security is a mandated service we must purchase.
But anyway, if FedGov mandates we all buy a GM “environmentally sustainable” car, ya think they’ll call it The People’s Car, or would that remind us too strongly of the first proponent of national health care (and workmen’s comp and unemployment insurance)?
Yes they can.
Just like the campaign slogan.
Hope and Change = fascism.
Thank you for voting Democrat. :)
BTTT = directly to your excellent work!
That’s the argument you should use to attack it. The court ain’t gonna overturn this on state’s rights because it’s really hard to argue how this affects it under modern legal interpretations. This, on the other hand, could get them to throw it out with probably a few liberal justices joining in.
No $#!+
Obama takes over GM, destroys the competition with absurd stories of runaway cars, and forces us all into vehicles where Big Bro’ knows where we are and where we’ve been.
Today a caller told the Judge (& Brian who wasn’t there today) that we are paying medicare premiums out of our paychecks. The Judge said well that is news to me, I never heard of that! Now for such a SMART man, why didn’t he know this already?
Actually, the states have a very strong states' rights case, in that, under this law, they are mandated (forced) to set up and administer the public exchanges.
Next step will most likely be a requirement to buy a GM car. Never really have trusted Hairdoo Perry.
Democrats better be prepared for the GOP requiring everyone to have a chambered bullet in their M16 full automatic under their pillow at night.
And if you don’t, you get hit with a Income tax of 100%.
Monkey see, Monkey Do. This Health care bill is just as ridiculous to me.
No thanks.
While mandating the type of car we drive is important, I am wondering how long it will be before mandating an implanted chip will be a requirement for any health care?
I’ll walk first...or go horse and buggy. I’m considering becoming Amish anyway.
Wrong! The content is irrelevant! Any federal version of health care is unconstitutional since Article 1 Section 8 does not specifically grant Congress the power to regulate health care! The people are not bound to comply with an unconstitutional act! The people are the government, not the White House, not Congress and not SCOTUS! They operate at the consent of the governed and have the final say as to how they will be governed! People need to continually keep remind politicians of this fact!
Not really. Legally, social security is a trust fund -- it is a reserve of your own money (theoretically, of course.)
I will never buy a Government Motors car. I’d rather be jailed.
“Today a caller told the Judge (& Brian who wasnt there today) that we are paying medicare premiums out of our paychecks. The Judge said well that is news to me, I never heard of that! Now for such a SMART man, why didnt he know this already?”
DUMBA*S!! What a DUMBA&S!
Maybe, but this court has shown it’s not a pro-state’s rights court, and that includes the conservative justices.
In rulings where states have passed laws that are both on the liberal and conservative side of the spectrum that have challenged federal law (I’m thinking specifically marijuana and abortion), this court has always sided with federal power over state.
This court is a lot of things. In favor of expansive state’s rights it is not.
BO’s plans are becoming scary and very Soviet like. He’ll be a dictator before a blink of the eye. If I say anymore I’ll get kicked off Free Republic...
So do I and love the car.
Republican members of Congress won’t repeal that law any more than they’ve repealed other unconstitutional laws that Hillary wanted. But the government won’t have the future revenues to support zombie Hillarycare, either.
Force you to buy a GM car? Hell, they can force you to buy the type of groceries they want, or books (as they do in government schools).
“I will never buy a Government Motors car...”
Dittoes!
It’s a tax, not a service.
Wake me up when The Revolution starts.
I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra CrewMax Limited, 4x4 short box, with performance enhancements that produces over 400 hp.
Obama and his merry tribe, can demand until the sun burns out for all I care.
No, we don’t have to purchase social security. Because I was a stay at home mom for 21 years, and the job I have now has a state run pension system, I don’t qualify for social security. No one made me buy it. If you don’t work, they can’t garnish your wages. With health care, I think you’ll have to sign up regardless of your employer or job status.
I took a Cadillac Escalade out for a test drive just to drive that sucker before they become extinct.
The salesman sat in the back seat describing the car and all its wonderful options.
The seats were of particular interest. He explained that the seats directed warm air to your butt in the winter and directed cool air to your butt in the summer heat.
I stated the car must be a Republican car.
Looking a bit angry, he asked why I thought it was a Republican car and I explained that if it were a Democratic car, the seats would blow smoke up your ass year-round.
I had to walk back to the dealership but it was worth it...
It won’t be soon when means testing is implemented. Soon Obama will be arguing anyone with income over $250,000 per year should not be entitled to a retirement “subsidized” by the government.
you can buy whatever you want but you MUST ALSO buy a GM.
see public schools. Private school parents pay 2x for schools.
I have no doubt it is coming.
Why GM? As you can see, it’s US-made... a Ford, to be precise.
“Why GM? As you can see, its US-made... a Ford, to be precise.”
He he. That’s where part of the humor was.
1) The judge is not “smart”
2) The judge is a closet commie.
LLS
Hillarious!
As long as I have made payroll I know a portion of withholding is for medicare...has he never looked at a pay stub? Or do judges and Gov. employees get out of paying in?
He is of the New Jersey elite class... they pay no taxes.
LLS
FUBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bump!
Government makes us buy car insurance, how is health insurance any different?
Ed
Parallels to today? Make laws that are impossible to comply with then you own people.
