Protesters march through downtown Portland, express anger at police
The Oregonian ^ | March 29, 2010 | Bryan Denson

Police and protesters engage with one another in downtown Portland this afternoon.A group of protestors marched through downtown Portland this evening, expressing anger at Portland police in connection with a pair of police shootings over the last couple of months.

The group first gathered in the South Park Blocks, near Southwest Salmon Street and Park Avenue, and then began marching toward the Willamette River.

About 150 people took part, many of them wearing masks, calling out chants and carrying signs.

One of the most common chants was "Cops, pigs, murderers" while another was "When cops attack, stand up, fight back."

Police accompanied the group, using pressure to keep marchers on sidewalks as they walked through the city, past the Hatfield Federal Courthouse and then turned south on Third Avenue.

The protest was just the lastest of several that have happened in Portland recently in connection with two police shootings. One happened Jan. 29, when police shot and killed Aaron Campbell in Northeast Portland in a situation that started out as a welfare check.

The second took place earlier this month when an officer shot a homeless man in Hoyt Arboretum when the man advanced toward him with a knife.

My solution for that mob would have been a thorough, continuous dousing with ICE COLD water from a fire hose...
(presuming the weather to have been as cold as the gloves, parkas, and flags flapping in the wind would indicate)

Sure it’s a “low-tech” approach, but they would have soon had trouble raising wet flags, their soaked, tattered signs, and on top of that, chanting is pretty challenging through chattering teeth!

I spare no mercy for those kind of punks - I’m from Portland, and I have had several run-ins with them while leading counter-protest operations against their protests. They are all a bunch of cheap, lying, thuggish, punks with little or no individual courage. The whole lot of them could die of tuberculosis for all I care!

I apologize in advance if this picture offends anyone's sensibilities, but I have to admit, this one picture crystallized for me the absolute disgust and distaste I have for the protestors from the Left. This particular image I was told was actually taken during a protest in Eugene, Oregon sometime between 2003 and 2007. It made my blood boil.

They have these anarchist pieces of crap in the background, but what is more appalling is that they bring a child to this and are having an uproarious laugh at this.

Outrageous, but needs to be seen, IMO.

Based on what I know of the Portland Police, they cannot be trusted.

The Kendra James case was a perfect example of the cops murdering a woman and getting away with it.

Why bother posting that picture when it is not related to this story.

Agreed. Too many of us, myself included, have been pretty non-confrontational about this over the years.

But the Left seems intent on backing us into a corner. Most sensible people know that one shouldn’t back anything or anyone into a corner unless you are prepared for a fight, and this seems to be exactly what the Left wants.

They WANT violence, discontent and unrest, I believe that with each passing day.

Anarchists protesting in large cities in Oregon is related, in my opinion.

I read about ONE anarchist. The real problem in Portland is that the Police department and the local DA have a long history of covering up police brutality and other criminal activity.

Whatever investigation there will be on police conduct in these two killings will be a sham, just like all the others.

Sounds to me like you are well informed about what is going on out there, seeing as to how you live pretty close to it.

I notice many riots started because of issues with the police. The most recent was in 2003 in Benton Harborship, Michigan. I am surprised we have not seen any massive rioting like the 1992 Los Angeles Riot yet. I know 1992 was a recession, but not a bad one like this one.

Nope - that one was taken in Portland, Oregon - city of evil, during 2006. Sadly to say, desecration of Old Glory is all too commonplace in the Socialist Workers’s PAradise of Portland - although not usually to that extreme, honestly.

If I had been able to get to that guy, he would have had a 2 x 6 permanently imbedded in his noggin, and I might have been wearing an orange jumpsuit for quite a while...

What you DON’T know about that case - or the Portland Police - would EVIDENTLY fill volumes. Your two ludicrous conclusions are perfect examples of that.

I have known several Portland Police officers over the years, and many county sheriff’s deputies in the Portland area (my own father was one for over 20 years)

They are all human beings, and people have shortcomings, but in general, they are a better stripe of person than the average - doing an often thankless job - especially around Portland.

Kendra James was her own worst enemy, as an irresponsible and belligerant drunk in that situation and others - so say people who knew her.

She tried to gain control of a vehicle by struggling with a uniformed police officer conducting a lawful traffic stop - the cop was half in, half out of the vehicle and she essentially pushed him out and was trying to run him over.

Perhaps she did not deserve death for her drunken and foolish decision, but it was by no means an unpredictable result under the circumstances.

Agreed. These jerks are very likely anti-authority, "government Anarchists for hire" who, among other things, wish the downfall of this country regardless of who's in charge ... and many of them likely call the Portland-area home.

Why waste money on airfare flying to some G20 Conference in foreign country when you can “stick it to the man” in your own backyard?! Hell, this might even be a training event for new inductees.

From a related story from a few hours ago:

Police Chase Protesters Through Downtown
http://www.kptv.com/news/22994510/detail.html

Many of the protesters were seen wearing black clothing and black masks. They carried anti-police banners and yelled slurs directed toward officers.

- snip -

The demonstrators also targeted the media. Members of the crowd ripped cables from a FOX 12 truck and threw newspaper boxes. Some protesters tried to roll a trash bin down the road, but were stopped by police.

I read the autopsy and attended the public forum in North Portland. There is no way that the story the cops gave could be reconciled with the autopsy report. When asked how the story the cops gave could be consistent with the autopsy report, Shrunk and Foxworth had no answers.

The cops got together later in the day to “get their story straight”. They lied and Shrunk didn’t get an indictment only because he didn’t want to get one. That is a fact!!!

>>”I read about ONE anarchist.”

It would be pretty rare to find a mob (except, perhaps a racial one) in Portland/Eugene NOT composed mainly of anarchists. In this case, the bandannas covering the faces is a giveaway: the INTEND to engage in activities for which they would be arrested, if identified.

>>”Whatever investigation there will be on police conduct in these two killings will be a sham, just like all the others.”

In these two cases, one was at least marginally questionable, but the officer was cleared by a grand jury (the proceedings of which were made completely public). The Last one was completely justified, assuming the reports are true.

Forum, shmorum - I know two of the cops, and two people from the hood who were eyewitnesses...

Public forums - especially in a community as full of [paid] professional agitators as Portland is - are worthless or nearly so.

You simply have an axe to grind - either with police in general, or the PDX police in particular - and seem unwilling to own up to your bias and the skewed, nearly baseless conclusions which are an outgrowth of it.

Calling something a fact and wishing (out of spite or whatever) that it were so - just doesn’t cut it. You ought to know that any human being’s story of an event that occurred quickly and under duress will naturally have variances which may not seem consistent with physical evidence.

Eyewitnesses have “seen” things they were 100% certain of, (and passed polygraph tests to back up their truthfulness of what they believed)that physical evidence showed to be absolutely impossible - this has been shown repeatedly in police investigations of all sorts in innumerable departments. I know from whence I speak.

I am as pro-police as anyone possibly could be. I have to say after living in SE Portland, and a crime committed against me personally, I’m not a fan of the Portland Police. (And it has been several years now - but the ick factor remains.)

I realize their hands are tied a lot of times, and the Oregonian does everything possible to put them in a bad light. But after dealing with probably 20 different police officers, there was one detective who was stand up and at least walked me through the process. Justice wasn’t ever done - but it was miserable even in trying to get help from them.

I’m glad that you know good ones and that your dad was among those, I will say that in my circle of friends, (at this point we are for the most part middle age moms, with fairly solid careers) that’s the exception to dealing with that particular city’s police department.
