Italian Elections Marks Surge of Right Wing Support Across Europe

A far-Right party has emerged as a key winner in the Italian elections marking a continuing trend of support for Right wing parties across Europe.

The Northern League is now a key figure in Silvio Berlusconi's coalitio. The Northern League, an anti immigration party, which has now become pivotal in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's ruling coalition, has seen it's support more than double in the last five years.

Led by firebrand Umberto Bossi, who once called for the Italian navy to shell boats carrying illegal immigrants towards the country, his victory mirrors those recently by far right parties in Hungary, Holland and France.

James Walston, a political commentator at the American University of Rome, said: "The League has done very well and they will be flexing their muscles for the remaining three years of government.

"They will push for further devolution and immigration and race will also be on top of their agenda and these two are issues which are of concern to many Italians.

"The League is very well organised and they have succeeded in taking a lot of the working class vote from the Communists and Democratic Left and they also appear to have taken votes from Berlusconi's own party."

The result comes just ten days after the National Front won nearly 10 per cent of the overall vote in the regional elections, capturing 118 seats in 12 regions.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, the party's 81-year old leader, said: "It's the phoenix rising from the ashes. The National Front has returned to the forefront of French politics."

In Holland, the far-Right politician, Geert Wilders, is poised to become the next Dutch prime minister after he made significant gains in the regional elections at the....

Nice to see one country trying to save itself. The Itaiians saved Europe from Islam at the Battle of Lepanto in 1546 AD.

Uh oh. What will replace the progressives’ favorite “why can’t we be more like Europe” rejoinder?

But let's define our terms: A right-wing Italian equals a Ben and Jerry liberal in the US.

Frantzie:

Thus, that would also mean the Catholic Church, would it not. And yes, the Battle of Lepanto did in fact prevent the Muslims from overtaking Europe.

I thought Charles “the hammer” Martel was credited with saving Europe from Islam?

Let this country be taken back by the conservatives, in November. If it can happen in Europe, it can happen here.

Oh yes - full credit to the Church. They saved Europe and this is why they are being attacked now. They are the only thing stopping Islam from taking over so the left/Islam must destroy them.

The American Catholic Church is awful with illegal sincluding Somalis. They are terrible.

Does anyone else find it interesting that some of Europe is turning to the right while we haven’t learned from them and are going left to the socialist side. Are our people stupid or what?

There were at least three famous battles.

732 AD Charles Martel at Tours (now France)

1546 AD Battle of Lepanto - a huge naval battle off Greece with largely Italian ships. Do you know guns? Early rifles were coming into being. The Venetian fighting forces needed barrels for their “rifles” or arquebus. A new company north of Venice near the Alps got the order and may have been their first order. These “rifles” had a devastating effect in this naval battle as the ships grew closer. The name of the company that made the barrels was Fabbrica D’Armi Petro Beretta S.p.a. founded in 1526 AD. We know it as Beretta.

1683 AD Battle of Vienna - Germans, Austrians, some northern Italians and they were pretty much saved at the last minute by the Polish Hussar calvalry lead by King Jan Sobeiski. If the Pope had not earlier signed a pact with Poland, Europe may have fell.

We'll make up for it in the next two elections.

Frantzie:

Well I agree that the Catholic Church in the U.S. as gotten to pro-immigrant, rather they should work to ensure immigrants come through the same process that my ancestors had to go through in the early 20th century when they came to the U.S. from Sicily. Unfortunately, groups like Catholic Charities have been or were taken over by “liberation theology types” which while being cleaned up slowly, still is entrenched in many places in the Catholic Church in the U.S. Still, mortality cures all heresies.

Yes he did, and that brings up an important point. Islam keeps coming back; because it has a long-term plan to subjugate the entire world. It can be defeated again, but ultimately it must be destroyed, like Carthage.

You might add the failed Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, which is considered to be the beginning of the decline in Ottoman power.

Wasn’t that the Battle of Vienna in 1683 AD? I failed to mention the Holy League fleet at Lepanto was mainly Venetian and Spainish ships. Don Juan of Austria was one of the hero commanders.

Christian slaves on the Ottoman ships also rebelled on some ships and killed the Turks.

Although I largely agree, there are even some first rate clerics, for example Cdl DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, who are sympathetic with so-called "immigration reform."
