Woman dies after tyre explosion (USAF Captain)
BBC ^ | Apr 2, 2010 | Unknown

A US air force officer who was on holiday in Scotland has died after a car tyre she was holding exploded.

Capt Jenna Wilcox, 27, was on a break with her husband when the accident happened in Dalkeith, Midlothian, on Saturday.

She died at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh on Thursday, five days after she sustained the injuries.

Capt Wilcox was holding the car tyre inside the vehicle, because it would not fit in the boot, when it exploded.

It is thought the couple had changed the tyre on the BMW Z3, after noticing a bulge in it, but that Capt Wilcox was holding it because the boot was full of luggage.

It is not known what caused the tyre to blow up.

I have heard of mechanics getting killed by old “Split Rims”. Those things were deadly but never heard of this kind of thing.
RIP Capt Wilcox

This is as crazy as the bottle of peroxide that exploded last week.

I know a guy that lost half of his arm when a truck tire exploded while he was reinflating it.

How can you say such a thing with any certainty? I demand that you retract your statement and refrain from further making arrogant and snobbish assertions regarding our dear friends and allies.

I’ve seen aircraft tires blow but they are a lot higher pressure.

That might have been part of her mistake. She wasn't sufficiently respectful of the car tire's relatively low pressure.

I've been guilty of that, myself.

I never stand or squat right in front of a tire I’m inflating. I usually stand to one side, and reach down - just in case.

NO and I’m a Red Green fan. Have successfully used his pilot hole technique although can’t remember on what. Perhaps I taped over it.

That’s unfortunate. But you know what, I think I might have rather held a bag or two up with me and put the tire in the back. Because unless you’re a jihadi, the suitcase is less likely to go BOOM.

Maybe in poor taste, but people really seem to be on edge around here lately. FR hasn’t been an enjoyable hangout for the last couple of months.

I’m reminded why I’m coming back less and less...

People are in bad humor because of the Communist Clymer in the White House. It’s understandable I think.

There are, however, injuries which are not survivable whatever the standard of care. Neither of us can know, on the available evidence, whether the injuries were or were not of that nature in this case. I note that you have ‘read too much recently’ about the NHS. As it happens, I have 60+ years direct experience of the NHS: and as it also happens I have personal reasons for believing that A & E care at the Western General is of the highest standard.

The air dare was a challenge for lodge members to hold a truck tire inner tube while it was inflated to its limit.

Red: "it takes a real man to get one up to 300 or 400 pounds."

Harold: Waaaaaaagggghhh!

OK it's not as good as the chainsaw races but ...

Medical care in Scotland has been modern for years. Certainly not 1950’s.

I am 40 years old, so have good and long experience of Scots care and the NHS.

By all accounts her injuries were very severe. To severe sadly.

And the hospital she was in is the best in Scotland, and a superb hospital.
