I shudder when we visit friends/family in the Heartland....the older (and yes, newer also) homes have those ceiling-high shelves totally LOADED with projectiles.......although in those parts they’re known as knick-knacks.

As I drove onto the lot the morning of the Northridge quake, I got a great piece of advice from the lot cop that could also apply to choice of sleeping accomodations...”don’t park under anything that can fall on you”.

The Northridge earthquake had an economic cost of over 40 billion dollars, higher than hurricane Andrew, and second only to Katrina in U.S. history.

There are a variety of plausible earthquake scenarios in California which cause deaths in the thousands; much depends on time of day, etc. You’ll likely see it happen in the next few decades.

I get a dangerous sense of wild overconfidence about earthquakes in California.

A seiche is is caused by a weather front passing over a body of water. Water is pushed and piled up on a far shore, when the front passes, releases the pile which then moves back to the other shore. It happens every few year on Lake Michigan on the Illinois/Wisconsin side. People have died when the return wave washes up and pulls them back into the lake.

I heard that too. Cardinal Mahony is on now talking about the chandeliers swinging back and forth in the cathedral.

Hey Grace, I'm only assuming that the references to swimming pool agitation were mine.

I won't bother to research my exact wording but; the sides and back of the pool are about 2.5 feet higher than the front of the pool and as the waves were running end to end at least one wave splashed 2 - 3 feet into the air when it hit against the wall of the pool.

And yes, water "gently released" over the low edge so that the decking looked as though it had just rained.

Speaking on nick nacks, my wife collects old snuff bottles, they are on a shelf in the dining room window. A thunderstorm passed through one day and a bolt of lightning struck real close. one of the bottles flew accross the room into the living room. Had I not seen it with my own eyes I would have blamed it on the cat.

Remember with the Northridge happened.
I believe after that is when they started doing retrofitting here in SoCal on the Freeway overpasses, etc.

I figured if it didn't break it wouldn't need fixing, and if it broke I could throw it away later.

I was a bottle of vinegar in a metal holder thing and neither broke.

Mom’s OK, the hip will heal. Looting sucked though. After 45 mins of trying to steal stuff my neighbor finally felt sorry for me and gave me a 20 year old wine cooler.

The type of ground under your building sort of determines how they "feel."

If your terrain is sandy earth your building could completely disappear, if you're on certain kinds of rock foundation your building might just break to pieces.

My son called from Phoenix at about 7:15PM and told us about having that shakey feeling. Said it was a very odd feeling having their house shake.

Last time I felt an earthquake was the Montana quake of 1959. Lot of folks killed in that one.
