"Why do Unions exist?"

To extort money from businesses. Unions exist for the sole purpose of extortion.

As a former employer and employee, I see both sides of why Unions exist. You answer is immature and yet so typical. Many Unions have given themselves bad names over the years, but so have employers, which is why many would think the way you do. In the case of Kaiser, the Unions balance out the excessive workload that Kaiser demands from its employees. Kaiser works their employees and doctors hard and pays well, but they also have taken advantage of a formerly cozy close relationship with SEIU/UHW management. Many non-Unions employees are jealous that they don't have anyone that can stand up on their behalf; they are at the whim of management. But many of the workplace protections you now have are thanks to Unions! As an employer; the Union and I had mutual respect and we worked to resolve issues. They kept me on my toes and visa versa. Management wants to get the most from their employees and good Unions want the most for their employees. Why don't you folks begrudge a Football or Baseball or Star's agent for getting the most for their client? A Union is the same thing only for many employees. In the case of Kaiser, a well treated employee give you better healthcare at a fair cost. Treat them poorly and they leave and you get no continuity of care. Bad for you, bad for them!
