Federal air marshals subdued a man who authorities say attempted to "light his shoes on fire" on a United flight from Washington Reagan to Denver Wednesday night, federal law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

The theory is the guy (between 25-35) was smoking a cigarette and was annoyed at being challenged.

My guess is he doesn't think his smart-aleck comment is too funny now. Likely he is the son of a powerful leader in Qatar, and he is going to be called home and have more than his diplomatic position removed. If he's lucky it will just be his money, power and pride. If they have had problems with him before, it might be his head.

NBC reporting no explosives in his shoes. He was smoking a cigarette in the bathroom and made a joke about setting his shoes on fire to the air marshall.

He has committed at least two crimes: smoking in the bathroom and interfering with a flight (by making the joke).

He will have immunity from prosecution, but he will be persona non grata in this country.

Sorry...don’t know that much about the report. Just remember not being able to justify the eye-witness reports of an explosion BEFORE the vertical rudder separated (causing the plane to wildly swing from side to side) snd fire eminating from the fusilage. Who knows...just idiot witnesses...
