Obama presses world to lock down nuclear materials
Yahoo News ^ | April 13, 2010 | Stephen Collinson

US President Barack Obama told world leaders Tuesday to agree on locking down atomic bomb materials to prevent the "catastrophe" of nuclear terrorism.

"Today is an opportunity, not simply to talk, but to act," Obama said. "Not simply to make pledges, but to make real progress for the security of our people."

Obama was addressing the leaders of 46 nations on the second day of the summit in Washington, the biggest summit hosted by a US president in more than six decades.

The US president wants the world's military and often loosely guarded civilian stockpiles of uranium and plutonium to be accounted for and secured within four years.

Saying that terrorists could kill thousands with radioactive material just "the size of an apple," Obama warned that talk was not enough.

"Nuclear materials that could be sold or stolen and fashioned into a nuclear weapon exist in dozens of nations," Obama said.

[snip] Obama assured Hu that he was "sensitive to China's energy needs," the Times said, adding that the US administration had already sounded out other oil producers to help reassure Beijing that there would be no drop in supply.

[snip] Iran, which has dismissed the Washington summit, defiantly said it was organizing its own nuclear conference to be held in Tehran on Saturday and Sunday with foreign ministers from 15 countries.

what do you suppose he promised the others to keep China's supply of oil coming? China builds coal fired plants almost daily. Obama bows to Chinese President Hu Jintao. Americans don't bow to foreign dignitaries....but that is the problem...is Obama truly American..........

So...its more important to the Master to LOCK them DOWN, but not a critical priority to prevent them from proliferating (Iran, North Korea)?

Umm, yeah, that makes allot of sense /sarcasm.

Well if Iran gets nukes, terrorists will still have opportunities to get them.

As Iran announces they’re a month away—not that we should necessarily believe their timetable, but they’re on their way.

And for good measure, Iran just announced that they have no plans to use their nuclear capabilities for energy production or anything other than wiping out infidels.

I find it amusing to speak of some kind of “lock down” while NIST operates a reactor in Gaithersburg, MD.

Yeah, gives me great pleasure in knowing that the folks who can't control the exploding duck and deer populations are guarding that reactor — good grief!

And next he'll discuss gun control, which applies the exact same backwards reasoning.

- Those that all need to worry about will not be the ones that care what he says, they will not listen nor heed any sort of agreement from the UN, etc etc etc. The criminals aways end up with weapons anyhow.

- The only ones affected by any sort of political gestures and new agreements will be those that follow the rules, the ones we don't need to worry about and where you have transparency. Take away guns from law abiding citizens.

- There is no leading by example when it comes to arms control. Weakness does not buy you favor, respect, or a moral high ground from which others see you as a leader and follow suite. Like the thug with a weapon in the streets, the rouge nation will simply see your weakness as something to exploit. i.e. break in the home of unarmed citizens.

Where he's coming from in his thinking is apparent. At least he's consistent.

From the article it seems like another Epic Fail by lil` bowing barry:

China reaffirmed its long-held skepticism about the need for sanctions against Iran.

“China always believes that dialogue and negotiation are the best way out for the issue. Pressure and sanctions cannot fundamentally solve it,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters.

President Dmitry Medvedev made clear however in an interview with ABC that sanctions on Iranian energy products preferred by some US members of Congress could cause a humanitarian disaster.

“If we’re talking about energy sanctions, I’ll tell you my opinion. I don’t think on that topic we have a chance to achieve a consolidated opinion of the global community on that,” Medvedev said…

Well, now that the horse is already out of the barn and the terrorists have theirs, the honest citizens are asked to become defenseless. Nice protection of the enemy.

And now the proliferation begins - esp. by those nations fearing Iran and who previously believed they could count on the U.S. for their protection.

Having excluded America’s brave former allies
from this meeting, Pres_ _ent Obama must have meant:
that he was going to make “real progress for the
security of our people in the 57 states.”
