US holds back on ambassador to Syria amid Hizbollah Scud fears

Security officials have become increasingly concerned that Syria has provided Hizbollah with sophisticated ballistic missiles that could effectively target all of Israel.

The claim may be responsible for the Senate's hold on the appointment of the first US ambassador to Damascus in more than four years and has raised tensions in the already volatile region.

Although US officials contacted by The National could not completely confirm that such technology had been transferred to Hizbollah by Syria, one official privy to intelligence briefings confirmed a story previously reported in the Israeli press that in the weeks before Senator John Kerry’s visit to Damascus on April 1, Israel almost bombed what it claimed was a convoy of advanced weaponry headed from Syrian military bases to Hizbollah along the shared border with Lebanon.

“I can’t promise you that planes were actually in the air, but it was close, very close,” said the official. “The White House had to talk them down from the attack and promised that Kerry would use strong language” with the Syrian president, Bashar Assad.

When asked about the outcome of the meeting between Mr Kerry and Mr Assad on the issue, the source tartly responded: “In light of where we are now, what do you think?”

This story puts a little meat on the bone on the earlier report that Israel suspended an airstrike on a Syrian arms convoy. It looks like Israel did just about put the smack down on Syria/Lebanon/Hezbollah, but was talked down by Obama. This probably explains the surprise visit by Kerry to Syria last week. What's really telling, IMO, is how this source reacted to the question about Assad's response to Kerry. It sounds like Assad basically ignored Kerry - so much for Obama's way, maybe it's now time for Israel's way??

Have been a number of terrorists attacks in the Siani the past few years. The bombing at the Taba resort comes to mind. That may have been a legitimate terror threat and not a ruse to get travelling Israelis to return home.

After the response Kerry looks like he got from Assad, I don’t think Obama is going to have as easy of a time talking the Israelis down next time

All this speculation about obama and Kerry presume they actually had a part in the situation.

I expect they were ignored and had no real bearing on the events that transpired. The President is irrelevant. It is beyond his grasp and over his head

I'm betting Israel informed the Bush administration of their intentions of bombing the Syrian reactor facility and there was no attempt to "talk them down."

Chances are, they'll attepmt to build another one quickly while Zero is around.

People keep trying to figure out what the terror attempt would be. They may be looking in the wrong direction. It may be the terror is about to hit Hamas or Iran and Israel wanted their citizens where they could be protected.

Re an Israeli airstrike on a Hezbullah/Syrian convoy recently, Kerry was in Cambodia at the time. His spokesman vouched for him. Oh, one of his spokesmen is in jail for child pornography. Must be the “other” spokesman. Sorry.

Have you ever heard anything else as pathetic as that promise in your whole life?

Scud fears? Yo, Hussein, they can't reach DC. Like Desert Storm, tell Israel to lighten up, leave them alone, and we'll take care of them. Doubt Israel will believe you, but it's worth a try.
