Small vocabulary tip to the New York Times: A "punching bag" is a defenseless target one damages repeatedly. That does not accurately reflect the Stewart-Fox dynamic. The correct term for an impervious, indifferent target one attacks repeatedly to no effect is "windmill," a reference to Don Quixote. Hope this helps.
