Is progressive Asheville Obama's vision for America? (unwashed hippies alert)
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 24 April 2010 | Partik Jonsson

Okay, maybe the Obamas’ Asheville, N.C., trip is just a romantic getaway and a chance to grab some 12 Bones BBQ, as the White House suggests.

But you know something is going on when even the local “tea party” affiliate welcomes Obama to their “mountain paradise.”

Critics like Hoover Institution fellow Shelby Steele have complained that Obama’s “ultimate vision, he has not been very clear about.”

So given that the Obama’s “kind of fell in love” with the Buncombe County burg during a debate prep visit during the 2008 campaign, could Asheville itself be a clue to what the President is thinking when he talks about “transforming” America?

Exactly. For every single one of these mountain goat wannabes, someone has pulled twice or more his societal weight so that the hippy can be progressive for a living and do this sort of thing:

Say what?

Speaks for itself. I live just southeast of Asheville, and believe me, Nazi Pelozi would be proud to represent them.

Asheville = The Santa Fe wannabe of the south

They wannabe, they try, they fail.

Don’t give credit to the very thin veneer covering the failure

By the way, do you know why God made the sky Carolina Blue?

Because he hadn’t been to new Mexico yet

12 bones = blueberry chipotle barbe q sauce.

A New Yorker carpet bagging refugee tries to do something fancy and impossibly, screws up good ribs

Stayed there a few days a couple of years back. Great place. I liked the old car museum a lot. Other than that, I never cared for Asheville all that much. Growing up, I went through the Asheville area a lot to visit my grandparents. Back in the 70s & 80s, it seemed so dreary and run down.

Someone should take out a super-conservative billboard right smack-dab in the middle of their hottest hotspot.

(Communist tree huggers probably don’t allow billboards anyway, but it’d be funny.)

"I live in a ‘real’ NC mountain county..."

Me too, not far from where 'Deliverance' was filmed. Progressives aren't much welcomed here. Where the heck is Asheville anyway?

But it won’t. The idiot leftist population has reached critical mass. They will ALWAYS believe what dear leader tells them.

Almost looks like fun until you remember that generally there’s a fair number of bugs and ants going up and down those limbs ... ;-)

.....I’m up in the corner where NC-VA-TN all come together...we’re just trying to get some jobs going...we’re at 15% unemployment...folks here don’t have much time to worry about ‘progressive’ ideas...they’re just trying to get by.

I went to a conference in Asheville about 8 yrs ago. Stayed at some nice hotel. Found a blood stained towel hanging out from between the mattress and box spring.

My youngest attended UNC at Asheville, was graduated and worked there for a year and a half. He was “downsized” and has returned home.

When he left for college and Asheville in 2004, he was conservative. I now have him in my personal 12 Step Asheville Recovery Program.

Yeah, but those lifestyles are the lifestyles of the affluent. They choose it. It is bought and paid for, usually, by their corporate six figure jobs or their service providing jobs for those.

What happens in reality is this.

And this...

This is how many of the non-elites live in socialist Europe. These commie blocks are everywhere, in every Euro city en masse. Large or small.

Santa Fe, like Asheville used to be a wonderful city. Then the “beautiful people” “discovered” it. And of course, they just couldn't just leave it alone. It just didn't have all of the things they had where they were from - it was too provincial (hence it's original charm), so being stupid, they just brought it with them.

Now it's full of Californicating Trustafarians, “film people”, fags, and phony gurus that have insinuated their way into local/state/regional politics and turned it into another declining-economy (which doesn't matter when you have Daddy's money) liberal Mecca, run by idealistic idiots.

"...What - there're no Golf courses? We simply must have Country Clubs!!! Build them!!! Where are the race tracks - we need ponies!!! Build them!!! No casinos? Don't be provincial - it's good business for the tribes!!! Build them!!! Water??? WATER???? Don't be absurd, there's a whole river full of water, right over there.
OH NO!!! Where did all these damned ordinary people come from? Those people are going to build their stupid little house right in front of MY view of the mountains - in full view of my pool! What will my friends from Manhattan think? The nerve! These New Mexicans are so backwards... I'm moving to Asheville!!!! Or maybe New Hope.... At least THEY are enlightened.... At least their food won't make my "partner" cry..."

Sadly, so many tourists are stupid enough to believe the hype (apparently even Presidential tourists), and spend piles of money on contrived caricatures of images that never really existed, that it chugs along on their money (and as much as they hate to admit it, the $2 billion a year that LANL pumps into the NM economy certainly helps keep it afloat).

The sunsets are still nice though...

BTW, I'm pretty sure God was born in New Mexico. I've met him there many times - just never in Santa Fe. ;<{)
