BANGKOK (AFP) Thailand's embattled prime minister vowed to clear Bangkok's commercial heart of anti-government Red Shirt protesters as he appeared on television Sunday in a show of unity with his army chief.
But Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva did not say when security forces would retake the Red Shirts' vast protest site, occupied for three weeks and fortified with barricades made from truck tyres and sharpened bamboo poles.
Adding to the tension, the rival Yellow Shirt group, who are backed by the country's elite, plan to meet on Monday upon the expiry of a deadline they set a week ago for the government to deal with the Reds.
They have threatened to tackle the Reds themselves, heightening fears of factional violence.

But the red shirts are communists and they need to be put down.
I disagree , they are not communists .
Thai are disillusioned by communism
They are Esarnists , folks that feel that the Esarn has gotten the doo-doo end of the deal from the Central Thai Gov
over all the years except when Taksin was buying their loyalty and votes with easy loans and others perks for their support . Fine , if their patriotism is defined by how much khao neo some politician gives them , let them try out such a rule for awhile . Draw the line at Korat . lakorn na ja .....
(visas then required for all the girls that wish to go work in Pattaya ;^)
PAD gave a press conference today ripping Abhisit. The man is now officially on everyone’s sh*t list.
Did you come to that uninformed wrong conclusion all by yourself or did you have help?
this is all SO NUTS !
There is not one single Thai politician that is any better , in any way , than Abhisit . Not one . All are just a bunch of Sino Thai greaseballs waiting for their turn at the trough ,
ala Chavalit .
Not one of these water buffalo riders have any idea what they really want , just more free khao neo and lao khao , of which Taksin is probably offering these cretins a lifetime supply .
I was serious about Siam dividing .....why not
I don’t think it has anything to do with Thaksin anymore. He doesn’t benefit at all from what is going on. There are a few people that benefit but I can’t comment on that because of Lese Majeste laws.
as the figurehead of their movement he is certainly involved.
Now if something were to happen to the silk company namesake
their entire thrust would fall apart because there would be no longer anyone to return . If I were Abhisit I would consider that as an end game
