From One Hispanic to Others — Arizona, You’re Being Had By the Media
Big Journalism ^ | April 29, 2010 | Alicia Colon

Posted on 04/30/2010 5:44:35 AM PDT by NCjim

Whenever I’d watch old WWII movies and saw the occupying Nazi soldiers demand papers from French citizens I’d think how lucky we are that here in America we don’t have to be subjected to this treatment. Since the Arizona governor signed an immigration law, Democrats and their fellow alarmists in the MSM are desperately trying to equate it with Nazism and the civil rights abuse of Hispanics. President Obama hinted that the federal government may have to circumvent the law.

As a Hispanic I recognize this ploy for what it is- a desperate attempt to incite militant Hispanic groups into protesting Arizona and liberals into boycotting the state. Why, you may ask? Because if what Arizona did spreads to the entire country, the Democrats are toast. And their media pals know this.

Ironically even some Republicans like Karl Rove and Lindsey Graham are worried that the law allowing police to ask potential illegal immigrants for papers will lead to abuses. Michael Gerson explained the potential civil rights violation in his Townhall column:

The law creates a suspect class, based in part on ethnicity, considered guilty until they prove themselves innocent. It makes it harder for illegal immigrants to live without scrutiny — but it also makes it harder for some American citizens to live without suspicion and humiliation. Americans are not accustomed to the command “Your papers, please,” however politely delivered. The distinctly American response to such a request would be “Go to hell,” and then “See you in court.”

I am an American of Hispanic heritage and I look the part. I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked, “Do you speak English?” According to the rhetoric being showered in the media I’m supposed to be upset at being asked for my “papers.” Oh really?

Ask any American of every ethnicity how often they are asked for picture ID. The answer is it happens on a daily basis- checking into hotels, using credit cards, at job interviews. We should be used to this by now. The only place we don’t have to be documented is at the voting booth. If voters had to prove their eligibility the Democrats would lose their base and their power.

Every attempt to have voters prove their citizenship has been thwarted by the Democrats and with good reason, from their point of view. They rely on minority and suspect voters whom they can truck to the polls en masse with instructions on how they should vote. Would they be able to do this if these voters had to show their eligibility to vote?

They use thuggery to intimidate legitimate citizens and now have a justice department that refuses to address this tactic.

At these proposed rallies to protest the Arizona law, who will be the Hispanics protesting? I strongly suspect that if there are any American-born Hispanics, they will be celebrities looking for publicity or militants from leftwing groups. Legal immigrants and U.S. born Hispanics like myself are more concerned with border security than amnesty for illegals.

If the media wants to know who’s to blame for the Arizona immigration bill why not blame the illegals who are raping, stealing, and murdering Arizonans after sneaking over the unsecured border?

Once again the Democrats are displaying the Pavlovian response of injecting race into issues that should be looked at instead with common sense. The federal government is not securing the border between Arizona and Mexico, thus allowing criminals to wreak havoc in that state — including murder.

Hispanics are once again being used as political pawns to sustain the Democrat Party’s power in the inner cities. I hope the rest of the country realizes that we Hispanics who are citizens are not in its pocket and will support efforts to insure that only U.S. citizens are eligible to elect our representatives.

Every one of them that I know here in Texas certainly does.

Pandering to illegals is an insult to legals.

The legal Hispanics I know also support the Arizona law. Several of them are very upset that Democrats don’t seem to want to hold everyone equal under the LAW. They did everything legally and think everyone else should do the same.

One Hispanic couple I know stated that what made the USA different was that the LAW was upheld here(unlike their country of origin). They had always admired that.

I hope few citizens outside radical circles fall for race hate’s divide and conquer game being played by the politicans and their corporate entertainment and media mouthpieces. Divide and conquer by race has been the American elite’s pass time for power over the constitution and rule of law since the beginning.

One would think Americans would know the difference between problems of illegal immigration and racism.

The Democrats created the artificial category of “Hispanics” in the 1970s as a way to create another class of victims, which they could imbue with special rights and privileges, including affirmative action and minority business set asides. The result is another minority group that votes Democrat. It doesn’t matter that, according to the Census Bureau, 51 percent of Hispanics self-identify themselves as white. The Census Bureau has even created the phony category of “non-Hispanic whites,” which are now 66 percent of the population and will be 50 percent in 2042. The reality is that “whites” will still be more than 70 percent of the population in 2042.

It's not the law, it's the fact that we know there are illegals here that causes us to wonder if someone we see is legal or not. But for me, it's not just those who look "hispanic", it's the Chinese and middle Easterners as well.

My family came to the U.S. in the early 20th century. At THAT time they were not letting just anyone in. If you were ill, or otherwise objectionable, you would be sent back.

It was required that you could learn English, functionally. How can you vote if you can’t speak the language?

NO ONE of our people was offended by the qualifying requirements. They were happy to prove themselves and to get to a place better than they left. They could not wait to work, save and pay their own way.

We ALSO looked and still do look European. There WERE, still ARE racial slurs. There were ‘off-limits’ social venues (still are to some extent). There were and remain many cultural challenges.

However, their mentality was:

“SO WHAT? I am now in a free country where OPPORTUNITY is unlimited! Everybody has to be something, and this is what WE are! There may be worse but there certainly are NONE BETTER than we are! “Proud almost to the point of arrogance.

None of our family sat around whining and wringing their hands because they were not welcomed as equals, coddled and shown preference. THAT day will NEVER dawn for people who are NOT WASPS in the world. It is a fact of life the world over, not a special or exclusively held American prejudice, but is NOT an insurmountable obstacle.

I am tired of whining minorities! All people who come to America look around and start grabbing…. The only difference between WASPS and the rest of us is that WASPS got her first and grabbed the most!!! Period.

So true. And the sad part is that it works. The vast majority of citizens who want enforcment of immigration laws aren't racist. They don't want laws enforced to keep Latinos out. This is a law and order issue. I am a proponent of legal immigration. I think legal immigration may save the country from the demographic time bomb that is exploding in Europe and Japan. We are a land of immigrants. But you have to play by the rules. Come here, register, pay taxes, be subject to the same laws as everyone else.

my former sister in law (by marriage) is a dual Mexican-American citizen.

If I could ever get her here to post about illegal immigration, our ever-tolerant mods would ban her in a about five minutes.

When she launches into one of her diatribes about immigration, it’s a thing of beauty and she knows her stuff. She knows how so much of Mexico is inhabited by poor and uneducated people of Central America and how they have destroyed Mexico (sound familiar?) How many “Mexicans” are not Mexican at all, but interlopers. She knows about the mindset that gives rise to such insane corruption, as these people pay their way into Mexico, as a conduit to the U.S.

She has a warning for us, however.

“If we don’t put tanks and machine guns on the border, TODAY and for the next 5 years, within 20 years, 1/4th of the U.S. will resemble the politics of Mexico. We will have institutionalized the lawbreaking, the corruption of gov’t, and then it’s all over. We need to stop allowing anchor babies and cannot allow them to enter U.S. schools at taxpayer expense. No use of American hospitals for anything other than a car accident or a heart attack. And the mere talk of any ‘amnesty’ will release not only desperate Mexicans to head north. It will also encourage all the poor of Central and South America to chance the trip. Which will only enrich the corrupt gov’t officials in Mexico.”

Then she paused and said, “If we’re not willing to do this, we might as well give them back the whole southwest, because it won’t be worth having anymore.”

While in Ohio now, she is originally from Colorado.

Not an odd name at all. Colon with the accent on the second syllable is a common Hispanic surname.

Most Americans I know of Mexican descent are all on board for the new Arizona law.

Every American citizen expects their laws to be enforced.

Many fled to this Country because their own Government would not enforce law and order.

I don’t care what color you are, if you love your Country you want it to be respected and not taken over by a bunch of thugs. The Arizona law does just that!

When the May Day (Communist holiday, coincidently)demonstrations take place in 70 cities (must have been pre-planned) the Mexican flags, torched American flags, and upside down American flags are sure to garner support for illegal alien amnesty/citizenship.sarc.
