U.S. Marines boot recruits with Confederate tattoos

A widely regarded Southern symbol of pride and states' rights is standing in the way of would-be Marines in their quest to serve their country – a Confederate battle flag.

Straight out of high school, one 18-year-old Tennessee man was determined to serve his country as a Marine. His friend said he passed the pre-enlistment tests and physical exams and looked forward with excitement to the day he would ship out to boot camp.

But there would be no shouting drill instructors, no rigorous physical training and no action-packed stories for the aspiring Marine to share with his family.

Shortly before he was scheduled to leave Nashville for boot camp, the Marine Corps rejected him.

Now, the young man, who wishes to remain unnamed and declined to be interviewed, has chosen to return to school and is no longer an aspiring Marine.

"I think he just wants to let it go," said former Marine 1st Lt. Gene Andrews, a friend of the man and patriotic Southerner who served in Vietnam from 1968 through 1971. Andrews is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a group of male descendents of Confederate soldiers. He counseled the young man when he decided to become a Marine.

"He had been talking to me, and he was all fired up about joining," he told WND. "He asked my opinion of it, and I just tried to tell him the truth, good points and bad points."

When the young recruit didn't go to boot camp, Andrews learned of his rejection based on his tattoo of the Confederate battle flag on his shoulder.

“Your hatred for America is showing.”

For God’s sake.

Don’t you dare EVER malign my love for the US. Don’t libel me. You know NOTHING of me to so glibly write such nonsense.

This from a man who's on shortly after noon and is annoying people the rest of the day. I guess kindergarten is only half a day in Florida.

If they were not Americans how could the vitriolic haters of the South call them “traitors”? How could the victors of the Late Unpleasantness “restore” and “reconstuct” non-Americans? They *were* Americans who were defending their homes, not traitors. My kin on both sides were Americans and real men who had the guts to stand up for what they believed in. Unlike, most of those who honor Confederate soldiers, I have no problem with the term “Civil War”. But, there’s nothing civil about those who hatefully snipe at those who choose to honor their ancestors. If you want to honor your Confederate kin, great,so do I. If you want to honor your Union kin, great, so do I(yes, I had at least one Union kinsman). If anyone has a problem with that, then they are pitiful.

Just a note to all the NON Marine confederate wannabees.

The Marine Corps has spoken and it’s gospel has been written, and there is absolutely nothing you can ever do about it.

Can someone despise the entity called the “Federal Government” and love their country(i.e. the republic) and their state at the same time? Simple Yes or No will do.

Coming from a group who advocates assassination of a U.S. President, I'd take that as a compliment.

A$$hat, care to back that one up? For me personally, I wish Booth has missed his victim. That way the 'Goon' would have been responsible for "reconstruction". Surely he would have screwed that up. He would not have died a martyr and my guess there would not be that tacky/silly 10,000 square foot marble Greco-Roman temple on the National Mall housing the Butchers ridiculous deified likeness.

“The south short-circuited the process by cut & running.”

Most of the running away during the CW was done by blue bellies in a mostly northern direction.

Good morning all you haters of republics and freedom. Hello worshippers of a Constitution that Lincoln hated and that you seem to not understand.

Did you know the first Continental Army was going to storm the colonial congress just after the treaty with England was signed; I guess they hated their country too.

A Constitution not followed is worse that no Constitution at all. For that situation breeds contempt in the intelligent and sentimental love of centralized power in the week minded. (Just look at out Yankee coven here for verification).

That statement proves you have no concept of a republic. Mr. Franklin would have despised a statist fool expressing those sentiments.

Actually that is true, there was this little matter about being paid for their services....

It's true, and just for you I have the proof.

Maybe if you knew a little more about our republic than you do about the confederacy you'd know that.

But then again you would have to know more about Virginia's greatest statesman and general first...

Let's call it what it is - reconstruction #2! Every persons reasons were different, so was every States. My family ( as you already properly noted ) Had their farms set a blaze, livestock killed, and belongings stolen..

There is a fundamental Right to be left the Hell alone....... I have family memoirs that discuss what transpired. It wasn't "Civil".
