Army to Test ‘Game Changing’ Gun in Combat

ABERDEEN TEST CENTER, Md. -- The Army is set to send its high-tech "counter defilade" weapon to the war zone in the next few months, the first real-world deployment for the much-anticipated XM-25 Individual Airburst Weapon.

Officials announced May 5 that a group of Army Special Forces Soldiers will take the weapon with them to Afghanistan sometime this summer.

During live-fire demo here, Soldiers shot the Heckler & Koch-made XM-25's high-explosive rounds through the window of a simulated building, showering "enemy" mannequins inside with lethal metal fragments.

Afghanistan veterans who fired the weapon for the first time this week predicted it would be a "game changing" weapon, a gun that can engage Taliban insurgents using distant ridge-tops, thick mud walls and tree lines as cover.

Game changing I guess as long as the laser can be used effectively but they have limitations. How is this more effective than a simple grenade launcher?

Too bad they’ll NEVER get authorization to actually use these in combat. You can’t shoot into a dwelling! There could be Afghani Girl Scouts in there!

A grenade launcher, or a bazooka round is just as effective and a LOT LESS MONEY!

The difference is in the precision. The charge is programmed precisely when to go off, thus when firing at a target behind said ‘mud wall,’ it will only explode after it has passed the wall. Direct and extremely effective artillary fire.

ha ha ha - never; however, your local police will no doubt be armed with them sooner or later. Gotta keep those violent tea partiers in line.

If you want to shatter the shooter's shoulder with recoil.

Well for starters it's accurate to 700 meters. It's also programmable to explode overhead or behind the target. The $25,000 price tag might discourage the average 'hunter' in your neighborhood for having one, but for the troops in the sandbox it just might fill the bill.

P.S. If we could get a collection going, I might be able to find a spot in my gunsafe for one. (I live in a great neighborhood. I'd like to keep it that way.)

This thread has just added to the FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".

Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.

They will otherwise become known as “The XM-25 Supply Stores” as that’s what will happen to them.
