The Springfield Air National Guard Base will now be home to two long-term missions: a National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) mission, as well as a new MQ-1 mission. In addition, the SANG Base will receive an extension of its mission for the maintenance of F-16 aircrafts, which will be fully funded until 2011, as well as additional funding for the construction of new facilities for future missions.
“I have been working diligently with the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard in an effort to secure new long-term, sustainable missions at the Springfield Air National Guard Base,” Austria said. “Today is very good news for the Springfield area in that we are able to secure these new missions that will bring new jobs to the region and that are an integral part of the national defense and homeland security for our nation.”
The NASIC mission at Springfield will include intelligence work that is critical to our security at home and abroad. The MQ-1 mission is an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), a remotely piloted aircraft, mission which is expected to play an important role in the future of the U.S. Air Force and homeland security.
The extension of the contract for the maintenance of the F-16 aircrafts, which was scheduled to end this year, will retain jobs at the guard base and bring business to the Springfield Airport.
A new mission at the SANG Base was necessary with the Royal Netherlands Air Force Foreign training mission contract concluding at the end of this fiscal year.

Springfield, OH, is a distant suburb of Dayton. Back in the early 1900s, the interurban used to run between Dayton and Springfield, giving passengers a passing glance at those local boys the Wright Brothers perfecting their flying machine on the flat alluvial soil of Huffman Prairie.
