Pelosi: Democrats reduced taxes to historic low By Jordan Fabian - 05/11/10 02:56 PM ET

Congressional Democats are responsible for the lowest U.S. tax bills in a half-century, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday.

Pelosi was responding to a USA Today report that said Americans' tax bills in 2009 were at their lowest point since the Truman presidency.

"Democratic leaders in Congress and President Obama have produced the lowest tax bills for the American people in more than half a century," Pelosi said in a statement. "Because of changes Democrats have made in tax policy, more than 100 million Americans have more money to support their families, consumers have more to spend at local businesses and our middle class is reaping the rewards."

The report showed that tax levels fell by 23 percent in 2009 while personal income levels fell by 2 percent. People on average had 9.2 percent of their personal income taken by the government in taxes as opposed to the 12 percent average over the last 50 years.

USA Today credited the Democrats' stimulus bill for lowering taxes, but also tax breaks put in place by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Lower consumer spending also resulted in lower sales tax receipts.

Democrats have spent the day plugging the report, and Pelosi took a jab at Republicans for not backing the stimulus plan, which included tax credits.

“Despite all their rhetoric, when the time came to support lower taxes for 98 percent of Americans, Republicans in Congress voted no," she said. "Not a single Republican voted for tax relief, even in the midst of the greatest recession since Herbert Hoover that they created through the policies of the Bush administration."

Critics of the study have said that high government spending is catapulting the country toward unsustainable debt.

Did Pelosi make these comments after happy-hour?

Didn't you mean the cocktails she made with the liquor bought by our taxes most likely swilled in the air force jet she allows herself to travel in on our dime. Gutter trash.

If you figure that there are more people who are getting tax credits, while not actually having a tax liability in the first place - in effect a negative tax rate - and factor that into the overall tax burden of the country, I guess, through convoluted logic, that taxes have been reduced. But this is really nothing more than an attempt to repackage wealth redistribution as tax cutting.

She’s either rehearsing for a cameo on SNL or she’s nuttier than squirrel dung, I believe the latter.

Must be nice to have sole ownership of the media!!

You have it backwards.

It's the media that owns the rats.

no jobs = no income tax

no homes = no property tax

no money = no sales tax

Americans are paying less in taxes than ever before!

If you look at the original article, the numbers are all wrong. They report the “average national household income” as $102,000. If they mean the “mean household income,” that would be around $60,000. The median household income is more like $45,000.

Looks like they’re just making stuff up.

none of this even makes since.

Even if what she is saying is true... haven't the Democrats always said tax cuts were a mistake and that taxes instead should be raised to pay for more big government programs?

So now Democrats are FOR lower taxes? I guess next week they will be for a border fence, and the next they will be for the repeal of Roe V Wade.

Plus take a look at the article. They simply re-label social security taxes as “insurance payments”!

This does sound like The Onion.

It’s easy to get to that 9% number when you consider millions of Americans pay ZERO taxes.

Pelousy can take her statistics and shove them.

“Pelosi: Democrats reduced taxes to historic low”

Now wait a minute here. She is absolutely right in that statement. There are so many taxpayers out of work under the Obama administration, that the tax take must be at an “historic low.”

These numbers are completely bogus.

They're categorizing payroll taxes (Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid) as "insurance premiums."

Kill economic growth and drive everybody into lower tax brackets and that will lower taxes for the most part.

Also, notice this:
A Gallup Poll last month found that 48% thought taxes were "too high" and 45% thought they were "about right." Those saying taxes are "too high" remain near a 50-year low
When 47% pay no income tax at all, do you wonder what demographic the 45% who thin taxes are "about right" comes from?

On average, though, the tax rate paid by all Americans — rich and poor, combined — has fallen 26% since the recession began in 2007. That means a $3,400 annual tax savings for a household paying the average national rate and earning the average national household income of $102,000.
This includes all those refundable tax credits that are allowed for people who don't even owe income taxes, meaning they actually have negative taxes. So these negative numbers are averaged in to get to the bogus number.

To: VRWCmember

And WHY has it fallen so much since the recession began in 2007? Because there is less income to be taxed.
