Why Conservatives Love The Founders
American Thinker ^ | May 16, 2010 | James Lewis

A Salon writer wonders, "What's the conservative fetish with the Founding Fathers?"

It's because we read history, my sadly ignorant friend. So did the Founders.

History is full of Obamas...

The Left seems to believe that Karl Marx found a better way than the American Founders did. But look at the works of Marxism: The Soviets, Maoism, Pol Pot. One hundred million human beings killed by Marxist regimes in the 20th century alone. Look at North Korea, my sadly ignorant friends. Look at Robert Mugabe and his ilk. Look at the Nazis and their close affinity for Marxist totalitarians.

I highly doubt most democrat party voters are remotely aware of this. I know that during the run up to the presidential election I was speaking with a very pro Obama coworker and he asked me why I wasn't voting for Obama. I told him I didn't want to vote for a Marxist. He didn't know what a Marxist was. This was just after the Joe the Plumber incident and this guy wasn't familiar with the phrase "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need".

Given the vast ignorance of democrat supporters it's no wonder Obama wanted to keep them in the dark by suggesting there was too much information about.

Most Americans had no clue who Obama was, despite "Rev" Sharpton's claim than in voting for Obama America was choosing socialism. Well, Americans are waking up to the fact that their votes are being interpreted that way and the democrat party is bleeding voters like no one's business. America is rejecting socialism...and Obama.

Conservatives have “Founding Father Fetish” because they understand that the US Constitution is a landmark document enshrining the rights, and the responsibilities, of the individual in history. The US Constitution is an epic victory of the people over the powerful.

Progressive Fascists, like the Salon author, hate the US Constitution because it is the largest single obstacle to their desire to impose their emotion based political dogmas on the people.

The Salon question makes it clear that the writer is ignorant of history, but also that so-called "conservatives" are not communicating the Founders' ideas to this generation!

As I've posted elsewhere today, this election cycle presents a golden opportunity. As I posted on another thread, whether it's opposing Shuler in Western North Carolina, or other candidates in places all across America, the conservative opponent needs to articulate clearly the message of America's Founders:

That life and liberty are gifts from God, not grants from government, and that those who promise gifts from the hand of government always do so at the price of individual liberty for those they represent.

There is no alternative, the Founders understood. "A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have."

The Founders said it best, and their concise quotations are available online for all candidates to use. People will understand if candidates will put the questions before them concisely and avoid the Democrats' "issues-oriented" answers. It's not about "health care" or any of the other camouflage "issues" put up for debate. It is about liberty versus slavery.

Early Americans who fled government oppression in Europe tried a communal system at Jamestown. It failed. They were starving. They tried freedom. It worked. There was plenty and freedom. From that moment, America's leaders chose liberty over enslavement to big government.

In another post, I added that the inscription on the Liberty Bell should become the battle cry for the 2010 (and 2012) elections:

"Proclaim liberty throughout the land."

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them." - Thomas Jefferson

This is an opportune moment for those who understand, as did America's Founders, that liberty and all its "blessings" (Preamble to the U. S. Constitution) are derived from God. That is the authentic idea and basis of the people/government arrangement provided (structured) under that Constitution.

All other arrangements are based on counterfeit ideas which place some imperfect persons in positions of power over all other likewise imperfect persons in the society.

The first idea (and basis of our Constitution) leads to liberty, opportunity and prosperity.

The second idea (of kings, feudal lords, Marxists, dictators, etc.) is counterfeit and leads to tyrannical rule by a political elite and slavery for everyone else in the society.

Even the uninformed Salon writer could understand that, if properly informed.

We are at the tipping point. Which way, America?

What is frightening to me is that many of my well educated Conservative leaning friends don’t even want to hear about what is going on in the country. They really have a ‘head in the sand’ mentality and seem to believe “If I don’t know about it, it isn’t happening”. No wonder this administration can run rampant over the Constitution and the traditions of the nation.

An overall excellent article, with the exception of Lincoln not being an Obama.

He was indeed. 'Obamas' believe in concepts such as force and not reason or deceit and not debate.

IMHO, the Founders would have been appalled at Lincoln's actions.

I've read Lewis' articles before, and this is just as excellent as the rest. Thanks for posting. :-)

How stupid are some of the folks who write for Salon? (I say some, because I think Camille Paglia sometimes has stuff there, and though she's wrong about plenty of stuff, she's not stupid.)

What does the nitwit Salon author think American conservatives want to conserve???

I take it this is the sort of dolt who can't tell the difference between an American conservative who wants to conserve the classically liberal institutions of free markets and limited government (along with the moral patrimony of Christendom--which separates us from libertarians) from a European conservative who want to preserve monarchy, the nobility and the role of the church (whichever confession is relevant in the particular country).

When we talk to people about Obama, we all probably state things like he is a marxist, lenninist, socialist etc.. However, that can probably turn people off. The left has been calling us fascists for so long that these terms are all just pejoratives that actual open minded people think we’re throwing around. Never mind that it’s the socialists that have more in common with the fascist.

We need to educate people as to what a socialist really is before calling Obama one. If we explain to them that socialism is the government controlling the means of production in society. If we explain that socialism is taking people’s property away and giving it to others, then we can go on to explain why Obama is a socialist. We have set the tone of the discussion. We can’t get into name calling. We have to be the educators like our founders were.

History is full of Obamas, and the people who idolized such power-hungry self-glorifying narcissists. The Founders understood human history in their very bones, because they read history from the Bible to the Roman Empire, Europe's bloody and tyrannical history, and the Americas... They are all the famous Man on Horseback, the hero of the hour who instantly turns into a tyrant. Even today Latin America is bedeviled by its own Obamas, who all demand to be idolized and worshipped. Obamas are a dime a dozen.

Abrahan Lincoln, 1838, after discussing how the Founders had made their names famous for all eternity.

But new reapers will arise, and they, too, will seek a field. It is to deny, what the history of the world tells us is true, to suppose that men of ambition and talents will not continue to spring up amongst us. And, when they do, they will as naturally seek the gratification of their ruling passion, as others have so done before them.

The question then, is, can that gratification be found in supporting and maintaining an edifice that has been erected by others? Most certainly it cannot. Many great and good men sufficiently qualified for any task they should undertake, may ever be found, whose ambition would inspire to nothing beyond a seat in Congress, a gubernatorial or a presidential chair; but such belong not to the family of the lion, or the tribe of the eagle. What! Think you these places would satisfy an Alexander, a Caesar, or a Napoleon? Never!

Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored. It sees no distinction in adding story to story, upon the monuments of fame, erected to the memory of others. It denies that it is glory enough to serve under any chief. It scorns to tread in the footsteps of any predecessor, however illustrious. It thirsts and burns for distinction; and, if possible, it will have it, whether at the expense of emancipating slaves, or enslaving freemen. Is it unreasonable then to expect, that some man possessed of the loftiest genius, coupled with ambition sufficient to push it to its utmost stretch, will at some time, spring up among us? And when such a one does, it will require the people to be united with each other, attached to the government and laws, and generally intelligent, to successfully frustrate his designs.

Distinction will be his paramount object, and although he would as willingly, perhaps more so, acquire it by doing good as harm; yet, that opportunity being past, and nothing left to be done in the way of building up, he would set boldly to the task of pulling down.

A highly prescient description of the goals and methods of the America Progressive movement of the last 125 years, IMO.

Not that I credit most of them with "towering genius." :)

Conservatives love the Founders because we read history

They believed in the rule of law based on God's moral order. The libtards have abandoned that and can't understand why everything is falling apart.

I have been involved in an exchange of emails with a member of the Democratic Central Committee where I live. She is much younger than I and frequently she has asked why I make so many references to things that happened back in the 70’s and 80’s. To her anything that happened back then is ancient history.

It took a little while to understand that she has no knowledge of history and the fact that history shapes the present. Basically, this article explains things that I have attempted to get her to understand.

I doubt that she will accept the premise of the article. She is locked into the idea that progressives are the only people who have made positive contributions to America. At one point I had to point out to her that the Founders were responsible for something she claimed progressives gave America.

I saw that there is a possibility that this article may not be able to be sent via email. I sure hope that this one gets through to her. I don’t think that she is a bad person. She is ignorant and very much indoctrinated.
