TLANTA (AP) - Delta Air Lines is investigating after 1 of its pilots was arrested when screeners allegedly found a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage as he tried to pass through security at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
The pilot - Matthew Lamar McDaniel - was released on a $5,700 bond from the Clayton County Jail within hours after he booked in on Saturday.
Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliot says the 3-year veteran pilot was off duty at the time and she did not know why he was at the airport.
Police say he had a Taurus .38 special loaded with five rounds as he tried to pass through the T north security checkpoint.
Authorities say McDaniel - who has a permit to carry a concealed handgun - tells them he forgot he had the weapon.

I don’t think Atlanta will have any say one way or the other. It’s a Federal issue.
He didn’t know why he was at the airport?
I think there is more to this story.
“I think there is more to this story.”
The Delta Spokeswoman didn’t know why “he” (the pilot) was at the airport.
Pilots should be required to carry a gun.
Lol
I get it. Its still early.
No worries. They way they write news articles these days you never know who did what with whom.

Uh Susie. Follow me here for a bit...
He was 'at an airport' (clue #1) and was going through security with his carry on baggage (clue #2). So maybe deary, he was like ... oh, I don't know...
ya STOO-PID™moron.GOING SOMEWHERE BY AIRPLANE
While I’ve never done something as stupid as leaving a loaded gun in my luggage, I did (unknowingly) once carry on a bag with 2 loaded speedloaders and a box of 5.56 ammo. I went through 2 TSA checkpoints without anyone noticing. I almost sh*t myself when I got to my hotel room and discovered that I took the wrong bag with me.
I agree.
After all, it's rather ridiculous to trust someone with the flying a multi-ton machine in order to keep a multitude of people safe....yet not allow him to have a gun because of 'safety' concerns.
Sometimes this world makes my head spin.
I stand to be corrected on that point— to hear, for instance, that he pointed it at someone or fired it recklessly.
Put me on the jury, and I will acquit on COTUS 2A grounds, in order to nullify any unconstitutional law to the contrary.
SHE did not know why HE was at the airport.
Pilots do sometimes fly as just passengers ya know.
I’d be more worried if airline pilots didn’t conceal carry. To bad it’s not a pilot requirement.
Now that was funny, thanks.
Atlanta appealed a Georgia state gun law that allowed people to carry in the non-secure portion of the airport. They won the appeal. Just a couple of weeks ago, the State of Georgia rewrote the law to insure that Atlanta could not make it illegal to carry with a CCW in the non secure part of the airport.
“Forgot.” That poor excuse always makes me cringe. Big time. Anyone that casual about their firearm’s whereabouts shouldn’t own one.”
People are fallible. It is not too unusual for someone to forget that a gun is in a particular piece of luggage, which may be what happened in this case.
According to the article he was caught trying to carry the gun through security. That’s when it ceases to be a state matter and becomes a Federal matter.
It happened to the Rodney King police officers.
