NRA urges its members to reject GOP Senate candidate Tom Campbell
LA Times ^ | 5/18/10 | Maeve Reston

The National Rifle Assn. is urging its California members to vote against Republican Senate candidate Tom Campbell “to protect your gun rights and hunting heritage in California.”

The bright orange postcard, which went out over the weekend, faults Campbell for favoring gun show regulations, a waiting period for handgun purchases and restrictions on the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons.

Campbell defended his record on 2nd Amendment issues in an e-mail to a handful of voters who sought clarification from his campaign after receiving the mailing. While lobbying groups often attack candidates who don’t score 100% on their issues, he said, “the truth involves much more than they disclose.”

“Like all other rights protected in our Constitution, the right to keep and bear arms is subject to reasonable limitations that do not alter the fundamental right,” Campbell wrote in the e-mail. “….Reasonable people can reach differing conclusions on where that balance can come out in any given case.”

The NRA has not endorsed a candidate in the GOP Senate race, but the mailing praises Campbell’s opponents, former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina and Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Irvine.

“Unlike [California Sen.] Barbara Boxer, Carly Fiorina is a gun owner, proud NRA member and strong Second Amendment supporter. She would give California’s millions of gun owners a strong voice in the U.S. Senate,” the postcard from the NRA Institute for Legislative Action states. “Chuck DeVore is also a proud supporter of gun rights and had a solid pro-gun voting record in the California State Assembly.”

Party labels mean less and less, and that’s a good thing.

I just received my NRA magazine this afternoon and low and behold there was a picture of Chris COX and Wayne LaPierre having a chat with Harry Reid about how he supports gun ranges. I think I’m going to switch to GAO next year.

If Tom Campbell supported the issues mentioned then I would not recommend one to micturate upon his intestines if they were to undergo spontaneous combustion.

De Vore is the guy!

Campbell would make a good butler for Boxer.

Carly is probably a squish, but the insiders want to run a broad against a broad to kiss the Femanazis.

I used to feel the same way. But a FReeper changed my mind.

Democrats have had total and complete unchecked power for much of the last two years. What restrictive gun laws have been passed in that time?

Pay the Democrats lip service. The NRA isn’t dumb.

I wouldn’t vote for him!! In my opinion if you are not a felon you should be able to carry concealed non concealed or any damn way you want....it’s your constitutional right to do so!!! I also don’t think the government needs to tell you how long to wait to take possession of your property.

What you're saying is that you want the same rights the criminals have--they certainly carry any way that they want to..............

That's what's wrong with all the "commonsense" laws--only the law-abiding obey them. That's why "gun free zones" are only free of law-abiding citizens with guns---but they too often aren't gun free, as we learned once again recently at FT Hood.

The NRA is being short sighted by supporting democrats. The only way to prevent new gun control legislation is to break the rat majority in congress.

Obummers pre-election contention that he “doesn't think we can get that done right now” isn't exactly a vow to not support gun control.

Keep in mind that the first vote the new congress or senate takes is to elect the party leader for that body. A vote for Chuck is a vote for Pelosi.

Chuck supported the construction of a gun range. Big deal. Can the NRA name one single gun law that Chuck voted against? Short sighted, indeed.

No one, including you can tell me what the goa has ever done on their own.

Wayne LaPierre thanked Reid for helping to build a world class gun range. Are you against more gun ranges?

It’s not the National Republican Association.

We understand. You hate the NRA but tell me what gun organization has done a better job in protecting your Rights? Maybe the Second Amendment Foundation but they just started their lawsuits.

AvOrdVet: Are you ready to post your “we all have to stick together” speech?

Not against gun ranges but against wishy washy no conviction gun organizations like the NRA. Being originally from Michigan I can remember when the NRA supported Representative Dingel after he told the NRA where they could stick his Lifetime membership and the NRA still supported him. Question for you, how long do you think it will take for Harry Reid to flip on the NRA?

AvOrdVet: Are you ready to post your “we all have to stick together” speech?

Absolutely! Always willing to help out a fellow FReeper.

But first a couple of issues to clear up: As usual you attack FReinds in the battle, and as usual you misrepresent our words...

As has been mentioned MANY times, a lot of us are members of many different groups... with me its the GOA and the NRA, with financial support to SAF, JPFO and my local gun rights group... and you would know that if you actually had the intellectual honesty to read people post(s) instead of constantly tossing your childish little barbs about the GOA.

Most true 2A Activist could care less about the politics of any Second Amendment group as long as they get in the fight, stay in the fight and do not not make backroom deals that water down our rights. Any grief the NRA is suffering these days, it has brought on itself by engaging in questionable actions while supposedly "defending" our rights... the old NRA used to be above reproach... these days, not so much.

Again, if you truly want an answer to the questions you seek; about the differences and actions of both groups, then please to go back to the link below, I believe I explained it well and anyone that can read, can understand the differences.

So as for your previous request for the “we all have to stick together” thread, I grant it willingly. And do keep in mind that the day you stop unfairly bad-mouthing a group and its members is the last day you will have your dishonesty pulled into the daylight... well by me at least. ;)

‘ole 2.5, the GOA hating NRA member…

Here is a thread where you spewed your typical, and not very enlightened rant, without listening to a word someone else says… Typical 2.5 whining rant about the GOA.

and here you are in another thread and using your typical whining rant with me… 2.5 gets the real facts and then gets caught in a couple of, well let’s say factual distortions.

So even after getting your butt severely kicked to the curb, you still resorted to distortions, twisting everyone’s words and in some cases; out right lying about your actions in attempting to defend your weak bias.

Many people have answered your stupid questions and countered your stands innumerous times… you just refuse to see it. Point is if you can’t have an honest debate fighting a common enemy, then do everyone else a favor… stay on the sidelines and argue with yourself, don’t try to distort the focus of this fight.

Every 2A group, no matter what you may think of them should be WELCOMED to the struggle we are facing, many former NRA members, myself included, who definitely have no love for the NRA leadership have been going back into the group because the stakes are so high, don’t let your petty bias cloud the big picture.

AOV sends with warmest regards.

The NRA has at least five lawsuits after Heller. That’s not wishy washy under any definition.

I pinged AvOrdVet but as usual he still can’t find a single thing the goa has ever done in their entire history. Just another attack against me.

The goa has never done a thing and I even sent them an email and asked why they never do anything. They not only didn’t change their ways but they were too lazy to answer the email. LOL.

Don't you realize its impolite to talk about someone without a ping?

An attack on you?, no my FRiend, just pointing out dishonesty where I see it and letting all the new members get up to speed on you and your petty bias.

So just keep on keeping on, and I'll be here for you...

They should at least respond to your question. It still bothers me how the NRA can back some of these politicians when they stick it back to them to enhance their own career. I think the TP movement hopefully will change that.

The problem the NRA has always faced is only five percent of all the gunowners are a member. The NRA has four million members.

The anti-gun AARP has forty million gunowners.

A politician can make all the promises he or she wants but when the letters pour in, it depends on who’s letters outnumber who’s.

Every gunowner should join the NRA just to keep the numbers up and they should quit whining about what happened thirty years ago or how many piece of paper they get in a mailbox.
