PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Former NBA player Chris Dudley has won his rookie political contest, grabbing the Republican nomination for governor of Oregon.

Dudley defeated Allen Alley with 40 percent of the vote, with 70 percent of the expected vote counted. Alley had 32 percent.

Dudley has been a consultant on executive benefits and a wealth adviser since retiring from basketball in 2003. He played 16 seasons, including six with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Both he and Alley are from the upscale Portland suburb Lake Oswego.

Former state legislator John Lim had 14 percent and conservative ballot activist Bill Sizemore had 8 percent.

Dudley will face former Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber in the fall. Democrat Ted Kulongoski is leaving office after two terms.

Hopefully Dudley has a shot, as long as they don't turn this into a free throw shooting contest. He was the worst of the worst...

Dudley ran a sort of campaign of obfuscation, avoiding the majority of the debates and avoiding situations where he would have to answer direct questions. He’s backed by establishment Oregon RINOs, the kinds who throw party money up to oppose true conservatives, then try to play friendly when the conservative actually wins the primary.

We’ll see what happens. Maybe Dudley can rise to the occasion.

He probably can rise to the occasion, seeing as though he’s 6-foot-11

LOL!! good one robert561...I had a chance encounter with Dudley once waiting in the boarding counter line at the airport...he pulled out a day runner to note his frequent flyer miles...that impressed me...so I said “do you guys get to keep your frequent flyer miles?” he said “absolutely...my wife and I had a free 4 day get-away weekend in Paris last year using our miles”....he was the only one of the NJ Nets getting on the plane astute enough to capture that benefit...the others acted like they could care less...that told me something about him.

LOL.....I remember Dudley and his horrible free-throw shooting

I do not know if this is true, but I heard one time he was challenged by some writer that he could not shoot a basketball off a pier into the ocean. He did so, 5 times out of ten shots

The only thing that disturbs me is the focus on “Green” by the candidate.

“Green” is a fad that we will not be able to afford. Most of the Oregon “Green” investments are a waste of money and will not pencil out for 20 years or never.

I don’t mind him trumpeting “Green” if he did it in a way that challenged the technology to delivery cost effective solutions that didn’t require the huge tax infusions and increases to consumers cost of living.

Disappointed that he isn’t stressing this and seems to just cheer lead the green movement. These people will never vote for him, they are Marxist at heart. These people don’t care about the cost as long as their green fantasies are realized.
