Maddow Digs In On Charges Rand Paul Would Have Opposed Civil Rights Act

Since last Tuesday, it’s been morning after week for Kentucky Senate Republican candidate Rand Paul. While he recorded interviews at NPR and The O’Reilly Factor today, he didn’t waste any time booking himself for the toughest interview he could find. Tonight, that interview was on The Rachel Maddow Show. Don’t be deceived by the lack of shouting– this was by far the most heated exchange of the night across cable news.

It wasn’t the first time Paul was on the program– in fact, he had announced his candidate for Kentucky Senate on The Rachel Maddow Show months before. But last night’s interview was almost like a science experiment: put two of the most ideologically pure people in the politi-media world together to challenge each other on one of the issues they each care about the most. For Paul, that issue is the rights of the individual and the danger of the federal government stepping over them. For Rachel Maddow, the issue is institutional discrimination and the moral obligation to abolish it. That, at least, is how each one of them saw the respective problems and successes of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which Paul had been coming under attack for allegedly opposing.

No doubt the smug, insignificant Maddow believes she has a ‘Glenn Beck-Van Jones’ moment here.

Anyone who favors affirmative action would also oppose the Civil Rights bill, that is, if they were being honest.

It could spell real trouble if she convinces her audience to not vote for a conservative.

How does a ‘woman’ look at herself in the mirror and see that haircut and think “Oh that’s attractive”

Look how old Robert Byrd is in that photo- If he gave up the Klan it must have been when he was already pretty old- and how long has he been in the senate?

Why, why would Rand Paul go on any show on MSNBC? What demographic would he be looking to reach?

The rest of the media have jumped on this believing they can effect the KY. senate race in Nov. With the limited attention span of the American voter and the media, this flap will be long forgotten by then.

I hope this teaches conservative candidates a lesson. Stay off MSNBC and don't give interviews to the New York Times or Washington Post. Otherwise you get what you deserve.

I suspect most of us would have opposed the civil eights act if we had seen where it would lead. The constitution and free market work just fine if they’re allowed to.

The media is just using this crap as a distraction to pretend Richard Blumenthal doesn’t exist.

I couldn’t agree with you more. There was absolutely nothing to be gained by Paul going on the Rachel Maddow show, especially to throw away momentum the day after his primary win. Her show is very far left; the audience demographic will be almost uniformly hostile and he should never have answered her hypothetical about settled law that has been in effect for 46 years. I have no idea who his schedulers are; they must be the same idiots that put Sarah Palin on with Couric and Schieffer, neither of which have the slightest interest in being objective. At least Maddow is an open and transparent left winger.

Personally I’m sick of conservatives who call democrats cowards for refusing to go on FOX and then turn around and call republicans stupid for going on any of the other networks.

Its hypocritical and pathetic.

Ignoring them won’t help either. They may follow you around, hear you use a nonsense word - like, um, macaca and then they’ll concoct a pejorative usage of that word and ascribe it to you.
