After delay, BP restarts 'top kill' effort (Effort failing? Narcissist took credit too early!)
CNN ^ | May 27, 2010

Posted on 05/27/2010 6:23:59 PM PDT by JimWayne

The light-brown material that was seen spilling out of the well throughout Thursday was the previously pumped fluid from the "top kill" procedure mixed with oil, he said..."I probably should apologize to folks that we haven't been giving more data on that," Suttles said when asked why it took so long for BP to announce it had suspended the top kill.

Around 1:20AM CDT ( same as video feed time ) The water got all murky, and someone on the “Oil Drum” blog thought it “blew”, however just after that you could watch them apparently sampling the flows with some kind of sensor ( still on camera. ) If the light brown stuff is “mud”, it looks like they’re still pumping it. I’m feeling a glimmer of hope right now ... I hope.

While Obama was speaking, and the market was making a significant recovery, including BP up over 5%, BP executives were failing to tell anyone that they stopped pumping mud the previous midnight, because of some kind of problem. Wonder if anyone made money on BP stock from insider knowledge, while hanging out the President to dry.

Also, I am a little confused as to why people want the President to jump into an industrial accident while the big complaint has been he is a meddling socialist/communist. Here is another link with now 4 companies to blame for failures:

"Even if you parked a D8 dozer on it , it would continue to leak."

Speaking of leaks..how bout shooting some sort double port catheter in the oil drain with an attached inflatable balloon until a better solution can be had...you can control the pressure needed to secure the thing to the back end of the oil drain by adding water or air to the balloon through one port and the other port allows forward passage of fluid (oil in this case) into a container or bag that can be emptied when full.

Ask any doctor or nurse how this works. Yes..I'm talking about a giant catheter like the ones used for bladder leaks, made of possibly an inflatable weather balloon with attached flexible dual port pipe hose to get a temporary controlled release.

If the surface at the back end of the busted oil drain is too rough for a balloon, secure the catheter with a giant spring toggle like they use to secure screws to the back of drywall.

I'm sure the NAVY guys will come up with something to stop this.

unfortunatly top kill wont work because of the geology. the sea bottom there is just muck.

It's all Mississippi Delta mud.

Regarding diverting to the surface with a toping cone. I thought this is what they already tried when the methane at that depth froze up and clogged the pipe to the surface. The problem is that there is just not enough data on working at these depths. Also they drilled another 3 miles to reach the oil, and I would be surprised if all 3 miles was just muck.

Of course there's a casing which acts as a wall for the hole. The top kill idea is to work within the casing. Just piling stuff on top of the opening would presumably mangle the casing and create a much bigger mess.

My interpretation of the current video is that it's starting to work. On the left, you can see the backblow from pumping the "mud", on the right you can see the venting of the oil, which seems to be starting to diminish. I'm thinking that the "mud" started by forming a counterflow along one side of the casing, and began to descend. As it gets deeper it starts to pinch off the outflow. Let's hope.

I apologize in advance for what is probably a totally stupid question, but here goes: Why not just use some C-4 type explosives to collapse (?!?) the whole sea bed area around the gusher, hun?!

Or why don’t they drill beside the former leaking well?

It could lower the pressure of the leaking shaft and make it easier to plug the hole

Huh? How come oil isn't gushing out of holes all over the Gulf then?

Heysus Chris people! There are hundreds of oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico, and thousands around the World. There have been numerous oil spills around on the planet, and yet the Planet survives. So far, this isn't even the biggest one. The Planet heals itself. Am I the only one who has noticed this throughout the years?

With so many wells, especially in deep waters (bad move), it was destined to happen. So what? They will plug it eventually, clean up will progress, and some stupid birds and marsh amphibians will die. So What? They die every frigging day. More species are extinct today than have ever existed. So what? The World keeps turning and adapts.

Back to Mother Nature, Iceland's most nasty volcano, Katla, is looking like it is ready to erupt. The last time that volcano with off, it contributed to the Dark Ages in Europe. The planet and mankind will deal with the oil spill, we always do. However, mankind will powerless if and when Katla in Iceland blows up (will be fun to watch Telabama say how he will fix it).

The World will be covered in ash for possibly (2) years or more. Katla will drawrf St.Hellens and Mt. Pinatubo. It could possibly shut out the Sun light for a couple of years and and kill crops, not to mention shutting down air travel indefinitely. It will cause a world-wide economical mess that will take years and years to recover from.

Yet, we're so scared of the fallacy of global warming, while new reports are coming out that we may be heading into a natural new mini ice-age. If Katla goes off, that will be assured. The above is from the natural state of this globe in space and its direct correlation to the Sun and its cycles.

Oils spills are the least of Earth's problems. They've been going on forever. As a 1960's surfer, I clearly remember the tar on the sands of Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches in the SouthBay of Los Angeles. It's a natural condition of the geology and the Earth. Oil seeps up and forms tar on the beaches. A natural occurrence on this rock. So what?

However, if Katla blows, we are going to see devastation on a planetary scale that is incomprehensible. The flow of oil out of one broken drilling platform of the hundreds in the world that have not leaked will be inconsequintial. I kid you not.

Here's another pitiful human forecast for you: Since Katrina in 2005, the NOAA has been predicting even worst hurricanes every year after. They failed to appear. That's an irrefutable fact.

I personally believe the climate and weather scientists are full of shit. It was supposed to be in the mid-70's today where I live, but was mid-60's. Shesh, and these people profess to know what the climate is going to be 10-20-50 years out? A fifth grader knows better.

However, think broken clock...it could be a nasty year, but not because of their inexact science, but only because of the odds of what Planet Earth will do.

Still, our marxists in DC are going to shove "Cap and Tax" down our throats because they say the debate is over.

I swear, I'm getting ready to harshly march on DC. And I'm not talking about waving a sign anymore. I'm talking about civil disobedience. I tried to talk some TEA Party folks into chaining themselves together, and I would pay their bail and fines up to 20 people, but got sh*t for suggesting such. Now what do you say? Sorry, got off track.

While I was channel surfing last night, of all things I saw nuclear physicist Michio Kaoku on Keithie Olbermann's show.

Michio stated emphatically several times that this is all entirely new, that scientists have NO idea what will occur at such great depths, AND... something I've not heard elsewhere, that it is very possible that the massive leaking could continue for many years.

YEARS.

Yet... President Obama is already taking credit for having solved the issue???? When he didn't even appear to know that BP had suspended all Top-Kill operations 14 hours earlier????

Seems to me that there are people in the administration actively sabotaging him......

“Obama will scorch the earth rather than resign.”

That is of course presuming the convenient conversation ever took place, which I find highly doubtful ;-)
