NM-3 is Richardson’s district. He was the first to run there and started his political career there (hence the carpet bagger moniker). It includes San Francisco-liberal Santa Fe and Taos, the Navajo Reservation, numerous Indian Pueblos and old-time Hispanic northern New Mexico. It also includes the ABQ bedroom community of Rio Rancho and the oil-field community of Farmington but is still very, very strongly Democrat.

The district voted for McCain over Obama, 61% to 38%. Griffith, as a DEM, only won by 3 points in 2008 so he saw the handwriting on the wall.
