Can’t, conflict of interest. The whole freedom of the press thing was to insure someone would be watching government. If they are beholden to government they can’t be trusted to watch (I know, they aren’t now but at least they aren’t paid). It’s the difference between being a prostitute and being a whore.

It is probably the only way to save the old lamestream media from fading away and going out of business. Well, one of the ways. They could stop spouting raw, insultingly obvious leftist propaganda and get back to their real job of impartially researching and reporting news... Bwaa haa haa! No, I don't expect that either. If/when the feds start paying their salaries directly it will at least regularize what is already happening, and we can simply call them all collectively Pravda.
