They borrowed money for a boat and put their daughter at risk for TV reality fame. Then revealed they had nothing in reserve for a reversal of fortunes.
Abby’s a brave kid and under other circumstance might have been a hero at sea when struggling to keep the boat from foundering with the help of other shipmates.
But the parents...What were they thinking??? Certainly they were counting on big-time help if things got bad—which they did and which they got. But there are any number of other hazards at sea than storms to worry about and any one of them could end your days in an instant.
Listening to the radio, I’ve heard from sailors who all said that the sea is no place to be alone under even the best circumstances. Things happen and when minutes count, help is hours away. You need friends on board.
No law against sailing solo or setting records while doing it. Just something you need to think long and hard about and be prepared for. And even then...nature can deal you a blow.
There are few things more important than freedom and with freedom comes risk and responsibility.
