Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat
CBS News ^ | June 16, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.

Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."

In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.

The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.

"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."

I read that also.
I would never become a Democrat for any reason.

You obviously don’t know jack about her. She’s shoulder to shoulder with Palin, which thrills me. I doubt you.

I guess that means Conservatives in Nevada should all just vote for Reid now.

Can you imagine if you were in the same platoon with some of these folks? They would be the one, standing behind the sniper who has the enemy in their sights, yelling and waiving their hands berating the sniper loudly about the girl he dated 20 years ago.

They are the kind of people who take 90% Conservatives and call them RINOs.

You read that and still had this "educated" guess?
"I guess when she went from Republican to Democrat 1984 to 1988 she was not a supporter of Reagan"
So you were just hoping someone would believe that?

Good quote for the Reid campaign to slurp up here at FR when they come poking around.

Wasn’t there one of the Republican candidates in Nevada that all the Ron Paul folks were trying to destroy because she wouldn’t let them play games with the party rules? Was that Angle? If so, I wonder if they are still playing that game?

Exactly and that is what I got from some of the same crowd when I supported 90% Conservative Fiorina because she can win in Nov.

No different than all the Fiorina haters and bashers during the primary and was commented on at the Dem sites.

Now that WAS a low blow!

I can’t believe you said that! LOL

She was a Democrat for four years, and has been a Republican for the last 22. Big whoopie do...

Fiornia is more like 50% at best. Yet, you, in your pure purityness, are the one joining the attack on a 90%+ Conservative because she happened to be registered as a Democrat for four years- over two decades ago.

You make a good point.

Who does Reid think will be offended by this?

Giving Dems the majority in the lower houses does not benefit Conservatives.

In that race, there was a more Conservative option- it was a primary. In this race, the option is the most liberal dem you can get- the head vampire of the whole bloodsucking family- and you are choosing the path of waiving some virgin necks in front of him.

In fact, Angle can put her transformation to good use, by appealing to the many dems to this day who still refuse to realize that today’s Dems are not the ones we/they grew up with.
