Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat
CBS News ^ | June 16, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.

Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."

In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.

The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.

"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."

Does the idiot who wrote this have any idea as to how ironic that is?

Sorry, to my mind leaving your party and joining another is a big step - it’s an ideological statement. All this shows me is that Angle became a Democrat while Ronald Reagan was seeking reelection, and she did so for personal gain - to run a campaign. Who was this mysterious conservative Democrat too? I bet if we go digging, we’ll find plenty to be horrified over.

Angle was a registered Republican until 1984. when she She switched to the Democratic party in 1984 She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

So? Maybe she was pulling an operation Chaos type thing, voting in the Democrat primary, which kept her registration as a Democrat until the next primary she voted in. That's how party registration in Texas is registered. We have a lot of Republicans here who will show as registered Democrats until they vote in the next primary. What does any of this have to do with her positions on issues now (or then by chance?)

Got it. She became a democrat during the Reagan years, but voted for him for president anyway. Interesting. I would never become a democrat for any reason, but something made her do it. She seems to be a political chameleon and possibly prone to making registration decisions based on political expediency. Still, hope she wins big. Harry’s got to go.

With so many former and current Democrats on FR I guess they arn’t disturbed with any connection with the Democrats.

Always being a Conservative Republican I don’t see any benefit with Democrats. As long as they have the majority in congress and the White House, America’s days are numbered

He also voted the party line at times.
He got a clue late in his time in the house.

This is the kind of thing that could have harmed her in the primary, but not in the general. Because as bad as it is to have once been a registered Democrat, it’s far worse, even, to currently be one.

I’m waiting for the hit piece that exposes Harry Reid as not only being a registered Democrat at this very moment, but for actually being the leader of the Democrat party in the Senate!

I guess when she went from Republican to Democrat 1984 to 1988 she was not a supporter of Reagan

Understanding many times comes from reading the article. This was in it:

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

It's an issue when you become a Democrat during the Reagan years. It's shows HORRIBLE judgment.

Oh BS

It showed good political judgment. She was helping a democrat, you know like Zell Miller.

She voted for Reagan.

Good job with falling for the leftist Alinsky talking points.
