The top Republican gift-wrapped a gaffe about the oil spill and handed it to President Barack Obama on Thursday, ceding the GOP's advantage on a disaster that has plagued the administration for weeks and called its competence into question.

Rep. Joe Barton (Texas), the senior GOP lawmaker on the House energy committee, apologized to BP and accused the White House of a "$20 billion shakedown" for forcing the oil company to set up a vast clean-up and compensation fund.

It’s just plain stupid.

What it really is, a giant distortion of truth, and as usual the Republican is the beneficiary.

Congressman Barton told it like it is. So I guess he should have kept his mouth shut.

Poor Republicans can’t win. Yur damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Whatever happened to the get a spine lecture they were all getting?

Frankly if you haven’t guessed, I’m on Barton’s and BP’s side on this. They all should have told the oil spill lookalike to stuff it.

Yes, one would think a US Congressman is “stupid” if one agrees with the 3rd world dictator process of (stealing) an immense transfer of stockholders’ wealth.

You see, there is a reason why most Republicans are weak..they just mirror those who elect them.

Give it a few days for the truth to leak out and Barton will be off the hook.

First rule to remember

The democrats are all criminals.

The Democrat party is a criminal enterprise

Barton will ultimately be proven correct; like Congressman Joe Wilson (”You lie”) who got the same treatment.

The question does beg to be answered though...

“If this isn't a shake down”, what is it?”

This is a gaffe? Even if it were, which it isn't, how does that hand any advantage to Obama? Now he's super-Jesse, the shakedown artist. He's in the process of cleaning out American's bank accounts and now he's starting on BP.

It is clearly illegal. That said, who in the Justice Department has any concern at all for constitutional protections.

Our country is gone, all that remains is to worry about what comes next from this nightmare.

It will all and then some be funneled to ACORN type organizations, labor unions and other “friends of Obama”

Yep, Bammy has another big slush fund to do with as he wills.

33 other rigs in deepwater currently. Only 1 blew up, ever, in US side of Gulf of Mexico. It is risky, but so is flying. Your plane could crash anytime, but they rarely do. And it is worth the risk to enough people. Same here.

Also, we are not drilling in deepwater because eco-nazis made us. There are bigger reserves out there. Now, there are more attainable reserves close up and certain locations and states have prevented that drilling. But the Sierra Club has not forced anyone to drill somewhere else. Its the spineless representatives that have done that.

Personally he should not have apologized! We know that next year all of a sudden the fund will be missing millions of dollars with not a clue of where it went....

I hope the BP Board of Directors summarily fires the Chairman of BP and then votes unanimously to reject the Obozo extortion “offer they could not refuse!”

That’ll showem!

Don’t these GOP idiots ever coordinate their comments/strategy, let alone consider the ramifications?

Perhaps that was what they were trying to do when Barton jumped all over their oversmart, underhonest political trumpery.

But what was that stuff about "apologize to BP" and "turn their back (Republicans' backs?) on the Gulf Coast" --???

How about some straightforward, honest politics?

How about some coherent commentary?

The GOP even won the day with BO at Blair House.

Oh, yeah? How come we're stuck with "Obama's Deal", as even PBS is calling it?

Exactly. What the hell are Boehner and the rest of them thinking? Obama doing an extralegal shakedown is a huge, huge political story -- right in front of God and everyone!

Are they just in permanent flight from the Wrath of Katie Couric?

We need to elect real leaders. Seems these days they are women.

What does that have to do with anything? The only elected woman actually doing anything right now is Brewer. The rest are either just talking or quit their job.

Boehner and McConnell both had lockstep support against the health care bill. Jindal is going to take care of Louisiana without the Fed’s help and Christie is busting unions in Jersey. Not to mention the number (I believe 18) of state AG’s who are suing the government because of health care.

But by all means, keep trying to bring a wedge into conservatives that only women are fighting. Especially as a response to a post about the number of rigs and the reason why we are in deepwater.
