USCCB President: CHA's Keehan is 'to Blame' for ObamaCare Passage
By Kathleen Gilbert
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida, June 17, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Catholic Health Association (CHA) President Sr. Carol Keehan, and other Catholic groups that broke with the bishops to support the federal health reform legislation, are to blame for the passage of the pro-abortion legislation, said Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as reported by the Catholic News Agency Thursday.
George reiterated his strong condemnation of the Catholic groups' actions during a meeting of the U.S. bishops in St. Petersburg Tuesday morning. The Chicago Cardinal had previously decried the groups, which flouted the strong warnings of the U.S. bishops and sided with President Obama and his claim that the bill, passed in March, does not expand abortion.
As a token of his appreciation, President Obama gave Sr. Keehan one of the ceremonial pens used to sign the legislation, and recently praised her for her cooperation in the matter. It was revealed earlier this year that Obama played an active role in wooing Sr. Keehan away from the bishops to support his top domestic priority.
It was also learned by LifeSiteNews.com that, thanks to the scandal caused by Keehan's dissent, the Knights of Malta effectively pressured the nun off a prestigious hospital board.
The USCCB, said Cardinal George this week, "never backed down" on two key principles throughout the months-long push before the bill passed: "number one, everyone should have access to health care; number two, no one should be killed."
"The Catholic Health Association and other so-called Catholic groups provided cover for those on the fence to support Obama and the administration," said George, who further stated that "Sr. Carol and her colleagues are to blame" for the passage of the health care bill.
In addition, CNA reports that George revealed that attempts by the bishops to communicate with Sr. Keehan in personal meetings, including by George himself, fell on deaf ears: more than one meeting, he said, ended only with "the same frustrating results."
The cardinal didn't mince words as he reiterated the bishops' position and its conflict with the position of Sr. Keehan on the federal health reform.
"The bill which was passed is fundamentally flawed. The Executive Order is meaningless. Sr. Carol is mistaken in thinking that this is pro-life legislation," he stated. George also said that the CHA "and other so-called Catholic groups" have "weakened the moral voice of the bishops in the U.S." by their disobedience.
George emphasized, in contrast to the way CHA has framed the discussion, that the clashing views were not simply "two equally valid conclusions inspired in the same Catholic teaching." He referred to a document jointly issued by several USCCB committees, entitled "Setting the Record Straight," that says:
"As Bishops, we disagree that the divergence between the Catholic Conference and Catholic organizations, including the Catholic Health Association, represents merely a difference of analysis or strategy. Rather, for whatever good will was intended, it represented a fundamental disagreement, not just with our staff as some maintain, but with the Bishops themselves.
"As such it has resulted in confusion and a wound to Catholic unity.
Thomas Peters of the American Papist blog notes that Cardinal George, normally a diplomatic figure, used strong words and that he "would not express them lightly."
Also, he noted, the conflict highlights Obama's direct role in fracturing the Catholic Church and its hierarchical structure.
"Catholics who follow Obama's vision for America, in large part, also follow his vision of the Catholic Church - as an egalitarian assembly of individual truth-seekers that take their hope from progressive visions of social activism, and who are constantly at loggerheads with an out-of-touch traditionalist hierarchy," he wrote.

Too late to bring back burning at the stake?
How about taking some responsibility here? They didn’t know how this sister felt, or they never heard what she was doing? Hogwash! They didn’t have the stones to stop her.
Hogwash! They didnt have the stones to stop her.
Bingo! If her Bishop from her home Diocese had ordered her not to do this, then she would have either had to obey or face excommunication. But in reality the Church really doesn’t have the stones to excommunicate anyone anymore, and as a result all of their nutjobs are starting to freelance.
The bishops themselves are to blame. They have given 10’s of millions of dollars (through CCHD) to community organizing groups who played a major role in electing the Democrats.
The American bishops are in de facto schism and have been for 30 years. Until Joe-Catholic wakes up to that fact and demands that the bishops tether themselves to Catholic teaching rather than Marxist philosophy, nothing will change.
The good news, in an ironic sense, is that no one pays any attention to the bishops anymore. Over half of them covered up priestly sex-abuse in one way or another, and they continue to stonewall the solid evidence concerning the corruption of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Word is slowly getting out via the internet. The fact is that the American bishops rank below used-car salesmen in terms of credibility.
Even the so-called conservative bishops such as Chaput and George continue to support CCHD despite the overwhelming evidence of corruption. http://www.all.org/pdf/fullcchdreportfinal.pdf
Wake up Catholics! The American Church leadership has been high-jacked by socialists
Man does this tick me off!!
“How about taking some responsibility here? They didnt know how this sister felt, or they never heard what she was doing? Hogwash! They didnt have the stones to stop her.”
When it comes to their appeasing ANYONE playing the “social justice” card, OFFICIAL Catholic leaders are always a dime short and a dollar late in separating the Catholic Church from its own Marxists. They refuse to acknowledge that it is Marx and not Christ who most Catholic “social justice” activists revere and it is that Catholic “social justice” activism that makes the political alliances with Marxists, at the expense of the basic moral teachings of the church. If you want to see the American Catholic Church of the future (”moribund” as a moral force in society), just look to Europe because that is the path American Catholic leaders have the church on in this country.
