Apparently the reporter was given access to McChrystal for 30 days. IIRC that is unprecedented.

According to a post at BLACKFIVE, the reporter was originally only supposed to be there for 2 days but the Icelandic volcano eruption extended his visit for a few more weeks.

Really amazing circumstances that resulted in this article. The background on author Michael Hastings (courtesy of FReeper kabar) only adds to the "perfect storm" characteristics of this entire story.

I don't buy it. The volcano extended his stay for 28 days???

Even if that is true, why was he given access to McChrystal for that extended stay? Why wasn't he sitting in the airport waiting for a flight with the rest of the civilians? Why didn't he catch a military transport flight?
