Apparently the reporter was given access to McChrystal for 30 days. IIRC that is unprecedented. According to a post at BLACKFIVE, the reporter was originally only supposed to be there for 2 days but the Icelandic volcano eruption extended his visit for a few more weeks.

Even if that is true, why was he given access to McChrystal for that extended stay? Why wasn't he sitting in the airport waiting for a flight with the rest of the civilians? Why didn't he catch a military transport flight?
