PRETORIA, South Africa – Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday.

Fun watching coverage on Univision. The Latinos are going nuts for USA waving flags and chanting USA. Sports bring people together. At least until US plays Mexico haha

One should hit a local pub to watch the USA matches. Did that today in Atlanta and the atmosphere was unreal

If the rest of world wants to know why the US is apathetic to soccer, a large part of the reason is because the US is not welcome there. Soccer has become a place where 2nd rate countries can fantasize about beating 1st rate countries at something, and that is supported by the officiating in this tournament. It IS a big deal when you have goals taken away in a sport where most margins are less than one goal. I’m proud of the US team for their sportsmanship in the face of such a rigged event.

Yeah, I really don’t want to play Germany in the next round. A chance to avenge the 2002 quarters sure would suit me though.

England doesn’t either, so they are hoping for ties all the way ‘round.

We’ll see. Of course the ratings are high as long as the U.S. is in it. Lets see what happens when the U.S. is out of the world cup. Let’s see what happens to the ratings when there are things like real football on the tube...

NFL football takes in, what, about $9 billion yearly? Why must any sport rise to that level before I must enjoy it?

Contrary to conventional Freeper logic, not all Latinos are anti-USA, pro-illegal immigration, etc. That still doesn’t mean people don’t love where they come from whether it is Mexico, Ireland, etc.

Too funny. I saw many of those games when I lived in S. CA. It was real nice to see Mexico supporting Team USA. Great job USA. Love the World Cup.

Yes, who in their right mind would want to play the Germans in the first game of the knock out rounds.

"Why must any sport rise to that level before I must enjoy it? "

It doesn't have to. I said in my original post that I am happy for my fellow Americans. The only comment I made is that what I don't like is how the rest of the world is always trying to push soccer on us and look down on us because we don't worship at the feet of the soccer ball. To hell with them. We like what we like!

Breaking news? Soccer? Who cares.

You should get off your high horse and check it out -- played at this level, it's actually a lot of fun to watch.

At least in 2014 in Brazil, the games should be on at Prime Time here.
