LABOR'S switch to a Gillard leadership will not be enough to save it at the next election, an early poll suggests.
But Australia’s first female prime minister has already made slight ground on Kevin Rudd, who did not contest the leadership today after recording a dismal voter satisfaction score of just 36 per cent in a Newspoll last week.
Julia Gillard got the nod from 39 per cent of people asked in a nationwide online poll who they would vote for at the next federal election, Gillard or Abbott.
Her worst results came in resource-rich Queensland, which turned against federal Labor after the announcement of the mining super profits tax. Just over 32 per cent of voters there said they’d back Gillard over Abbott.
The polling in NSW, where the unpopular state Labor government is expected to be swept from power next year after suffering a swing of more than 25 per cent in a by-election last weekend, was equally damning.
There, Gillard got the nod from just over 33 per cent of voters.
Brian Hand, of Condobolin, said federal politics now echoed NSW’s state political woes.
“Who is going to be the leader this week? Labour politics, it would seem, (equals) instability.”
The Daily Telegraph’s national political editor Malcolm Farr said the challenge for Labor was to “… somehow draw a line between Rudd and Gillard, and not just a distinction based on style”.
“Fat chance,” he wrote. “If Kevin Rudd has made clunky decisions over the past six months, so has Julia Gillard.
“Even the appeal of supporting Australia’s first female Prime Minister will not be enough to save the Labor government at the election, just as the first woman Premier in NSW won’t save Labor there.”

Technically by early next year at the latest, but most likely this year.

So what exactly have Rudd and Labor done to screw up so badly?
I thought that first term federal governments generally were re-elected. But here you have Labor dumping a sitting PM before the end of their first mandate.
In other words, is Rudd the Jimmy Carter of Australia?
Rudd dumped a bunch of the policies he was elected on, antagonising his base. People have realised his public appearance was largely a sham, and no longer trust him, the opposition elected a more credible leader, who has revitalised the conservative base, giving people a real alternative, the stimulus package that Rudd claimed had kept us out of recession (the fact we avoided recession being something that did make him popular) has proven to include both massive waste of billions of dollars, and errors that actually killed people, and there are still people at risk - when the governments stimulus package has made your house more likely to burn to the ground and they are telling you that it may take years before it can be checked for safety, the shine comes off. And most recently, Rudd has proposed massive tax changes to the mining industry, which most Australians realise is the thing that really kept us out of recession and don’t want to see compromised.
Not to mention, mining is a real thing, not a fiance, paper pushing, swapping, debt flipping activity.
