“The problem Obama has is.....what is he going to do with over 600,000 troops back in the U.S? There are no jobs for them. They can vote when they get home and he knows which way they will vote. I would be surprised if this thing lasted another two years.”

Now that’s worth thinking about. And don’t think they’re not puzzling over that one.
These jokers make it up as they go along, then find things never quite work out the way they’d theorized. They haven’t got a long-view thinker among them. We already saw that Team O wanted to start a ‘domestic army’. That didn’t go over too well, the Constitution being what it is ... But it seems that would have been their ‘solution’ to us being their ‘problem’.

“Your whole outlook on the world changes when someone is shooting at your arse”

I have a healthy respect for what you said. I bow to your greater experience and TG I haven’t had it.

I posted this because I find it extremely interesting and want other’s views. I have my own views on parts of it, however, for example, it’s my own idea about a deal between McC and O re ‘early retirement’.
No apologies necessary!

Courageous restraint medal? If ever a medal was created to be rewarded posthumously, this is it.

“That is very simple. He could have resigned and told the President, privately, why.”

It’s my understanding that there were rumbles about these stupid ROE for a while, but nothing was done to change them. I would imagine that McChrystal conveyed such to Resident Obama, previously. So maybe this ‘exit’ was meant to take advantage of the situation, gain publicity, and scrap the ROE? I’m just wondering, is all. If McC just resigned quietly and told O privately, why, then nothing would change. Guessing.

Good one, chuckee. Like your tagline also. Krugman is a weasel of the lowest order.

One very important thing would have changed. Gen. McChrystal would not have been in charge of executing 0baMao’s orders.

You post, wistfully? ;”And all of a sudden Petraeus has the luxury of changing the ROE as if it was McCrystal’s rules. Why didn't Petraeus change the ROE a year ago?”

Sorry, folks. REALLY sorry as my dear grandson that I raised is fighting under these traitorous rules meant to protect the CICINO’s REAL friends, the Taliban.

"Incoming Afghan commander Gen. David Petraeus told senators today at his confirmation hearing that he has no intention of changing the rules of engagement or the “tactical directive,” which guides the use of air strikes, put in place by his predecessor."

As a father of a soldier serving with special forces in Afghanistan, here is what I think. If McCrystall really has a problem with the ROE, if they really were not his rules (he has been quoted several times in various publications saying they were necessary), if he really thinks Obama is dangerous to his men, if he really loves his troops, if he is really a patriot, if he is really a man he would just go the cameras and warn the American people by speaking clearly instead of this charade with a liberal rag.

Sorry but a man with all the intelligence, conviction, and love for his men that you all say he has would just stand up and say this is wrong, his career be damned. Our sons lives are shown to be nothing but cheap resources while the General plays his game.

Exactly.

that is how a man of honor would do it. I had been praying - as the grandmother who raised a soldier who is in his second deployment in a unit that is "the point of the spear" , I had been praying that McCrystal AND other officers - even Petreaus - would stand up together and expose these traitorous ROE's for what they are. If they had all gone, in a block, to DC and said they would all publicly stand against these rules - what could obummer do? One, he could fire them all, which he wouldn't dare do.

He would never have dared risk the fire storm of having a block of top officers - from MULLEN on down - publically threatening to retire en masse and exploding the issue for all the world to see.

I wonder if they had presented him, quietly, with the choice of rescinding the ROE or having a public fight he would not win, if he wouldn't have backed down.

I doubt even his blind narcissism would have held up to that.

Why didn't Petraeus change the ROE a year ago?

Maybe because he was a little busy - battling cancer?

I suspicion you are right.

His rigidity in his daily regimen was spookily stark -

Reportedly, he ran 7-8 miles a day, ate only one meal and slept only 4 hours a night....

McChrystal is legally entitled to his retirement whether he retires or is fired by Obama, so that played no part in this.

I don't believe McM is a fool. Only a fool would have idly badmouthed Obama & Co. to ROLLING STONE w/o good reason. The email author here makes a good argument as to McM’s intentions.

I expect McM to hit the talk & speakers circuit soon. That will be the tell as to why he did this. If he doesn't, that will be telling, too: He WAS a blabbermouth fool.

I agree completely. But, that does not follow their normal and necessary chain of command. However, these are unique and critical times which call for bold action like we saw in our founding fathers. Did these Generals tell Obama his ROE where so ludacris and dangerous they would not carry them out? Obviously not. I am quickly losing respect for the there military politicians.

“McChrystal is legally entitled to his retirement whether he retires or is fired by Obama, so that played no part in this.”

Oh HO! I beg to differ! I just heard this morning (day after my posting this) that McChrystal could and would have retired at the 3-star level, but it was too early for him to get retirement at the 4-star level. So that makes sense, no? Still a backroom Obama deal

What’s bothering me now is this: Is it true Petraeus promised Congress NOT to change the ROE? Or had they already been changed, say, just before he said that, so he was safe?
