The behemoth Taiwanese oil skimmer, A Whale, is not yet ready attack the Gulf of Mexico oil spill after a weekend of testing proved inconclusive, said a statement this morning from TMT Shipping Offshore, owner of the ship.

"After an initial 48-hour testing period, results remain inconclusive in light of the rough sea state we are encountering," said Bob Grantham, spokesman for the company. "Over this same period, very few other skimmers have even been deployed. Therefore, working in close coordination with the US Coast Guard, we will be undertaking an additional testing period to make operational and technological adjustments aimed at improving skimming effectiveness given the actual conditions we are encountering in the Gulf."

This vessel could/should have been in the Gulf of Mexico sucking up this extremely toxic sludge days after the ‘Obamagusher’ began!

Testing, more testing. What do we lose by letting it go out and try?

I’ve seen a few of these articles today, but not one of them has said how A Whale has failed any tests.

They talk about rough seas in which hampers all cleanup, but they don’t say something like “A Whale only collects at half the rate expected”, which is still a lot faster than anything else we have out collecting).

It’s almost like the articles have been trying to blame A Whale for the rough sea problems.

OK let me get this straight, the supposed worst ecological disaster in the history of mankind is taking place, according to the obama administration. A chance to stop it or diffuse it is available and instead of using it they will do a study first!

Take down the rules and open the gulf to anything and anybody, who wants to clean it up.

Unless of course this gov't wants the disaster to escalate.

It did not mention in the article but I believe I heard that it could take in 1,000,000 gallons a day.

Any person who can’t see the deliberate foot dragging of the administration at this point is in a state of denial.

What total complete stupidity!

It was tested using fire fighting foam and worked perfectly.

Unleash the EPA from all its stupid rules. Fire the totally ineffective Lisa Jackson. (She, like most to the rest of Zer0’s administration are there solely because they’re black, but are in way over their heads.)

Start getting rid of the oil, before it hits the loop current.

Skim baby skim!

It wasn’t built by the UAW and isn’t operated by Teamsters.
So you can see Baraq’s aversion to using it........

The Obama administration would lose the ability to turn the entire population of the Gulf region against “big oil”. That is what’s going on here. Extreme environmental and economic damage IS the goal here. Recently, miles of oil boom had been vandalized and cut up. Hmmmm.. Now WHO would do this and why? Hmmm... Obama’s lack of action is intentional.

Good point. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a President that was working for America instead of the leader of a coalition to destroy the country?

Great point. The GOP should come out blasting away at the EPA over this (especially with all the talk of cap and tax in the air). The EPA can’t see the forest (the greatest environmental disaster in our history) for the trees (its useless regulations supposedly enacted to “protect the environment”).

“Unleash the EPA from all its stupid rules.”

Yeah that would be the day! A Whale’s discharge is only 99% oil free... not good enough, hence the continued testing. Rough seas: not for a 1000 footer... the smaller boats take in in the shorts with current conditions... A Whale takes oiled water in through slots in the bow... unlike other skimmers.

From further down the article: [company spokeshole] Being a newly developed tool to battle oil slicks, the A Whale, a 10-story-tall, 350-yard-long vessel, requires testing and adjustments before moving into action, he said.

This isn't EPA testing, or Coast Guard, it is testing by the company to see if the skimmer can pick up emulsified tars without clogging the openings, the filters and the ejection ports. They are likely going to attempt to keep the craft on the 'sheen' areas to avoid the tar mats which are nearly impossible to skim with a craft like this.
