Crist continues to lead Rubio in new PPP poll

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 Crist Looking Good Thanks mostly to support from Democrats Charlie Crist is the leader in the Florida Senate race. In the most likely match up against Kendrick Meek he gets 35% to 29% for Marco Rubio and 17% for Meek. His lead expands with Jeff Greene as the Democratic nominee. In that scenario Crist gets 38% with Rubio still at 29% and Greene at only 13%.

Crist has become the de facto Democratic nominee and that's where most of his support is coming from. He's currently getting 44% of Democrats in the Meek match up, along with 40% of independents and 23% of Republicans. Crist has increased his support across the board since PPP last polled this race in early March. At that time, while still a Republican, he got just 27% to 34% for Rubio and 25% for Meek. He's now doing 12 points better with Democrats, 5 points better with independents, and somewhat surprisingly even 5 points better with Republicans.

Whether Crist can hold on to this fragile coalition through the fall remains to be seen. Right now 48% of Democrats have no opinion about Meek and 50% are ambivalent toward Greene. Will Crist continue to have such strong Democratic support after the party has a nominee who's built up their exposure during a successful primary campaign? And will he continue to hold onto more than 20% of the Republican vote as it becomes clearer and clearer that Democrats are providing the bulk of his support? What happens on those two fronts will probably determine Crist's ultimate fate.

Marco Rubio's personal favorability has taken a large hit in the four months since PPP last polled this race. In March voters were pretty evenly divided on him with 31% seeing him positively and 32% negatively. He's still at 31% with a favorable opinion of him but his negatives have swelled in the interim to 46%. Particularly troubling for Rubio is that a majority of independents now have an unfavorable opinion of him. Like Rand Paul in Kentucky, the better voters have gotten to know Rubio the less they've liked him.

The Democrats aren't doing too well on the personal favorability front either. For both Meek and Greene Republicans dislike them more than Democrats like them, and additionally independents don't like either of them. That adds up to an 18/27 favorability for Meek and a 15/26 one for Greene. The most striking thing in those numbers is that a plurality of Democrats see Greene unfavorably, 23/27. We'll have Democratic primary numbers out later this week.

A lot can happen between now and November, but there's no doubt Charlie Crist has a whole lot of momentum on his side. Whether he can sustain that on through election day we shall see.

Check the methodology and bias of your source and you will answer your own question.

Is Crist an unprincipled scumbag or what, to be pursuing his personal ambition...after he said he would NOT run as an Independent if Republicans rejected him.

Independent my butt.

He's Democrat through and through.

No wonder they're supporting him over their own candidate.

PPP has bias but Rubio screwed the pooch on AZ. A lot of people in FL know Rubio tried to block an AZ like law when he was in the FL House.

Crist is pond scum but Rubio is Mel Martinez 2 aka a open-border pro-La Raza POS.

Typical of the RINO GOP in FL to screw up an election with 2 RINOs.

It’s a lame media poll, didn’t you learn anything from Journolist?

Polls are no better than the news journalist ... push polling. I note that the same outfit has dingy Harry leading Angle.

The lame stream has sent in the cavalry to try and save Democrats with lying polls. Is that new?

But where will they hide the debt, the looming bankruptcy and the unemployed. Going to take huge lying sack to put all that in.

This is so depressing. Crist is probably going to win, because he’s getting mostly Dems who don’t want to vote for the idiot Meeks combined with RINOs. What will put him over the top will be the Dems. This is a conservative state and RINOs couldn’t win alone, which is what he knew when he bailed on the GOP.

I understand what you are saying, but it is utter stupidity on the part of Republicans in Florida to back Crist over this. Because by either not voting (we’re seeing where that is getting us) or voting for Crist, Floridians will shoot themselves in the foot.

Rubio is not an open-borders person. I recognize your name from a lot of the kill-Bush-he’s-for-amnesty posts and you were wrong...but you succeeded. I guess you’re trying to do the same to Rubio, probably because he has a Spanish last name.

Rubio is conservative in every way. If Crist (who is not conservative in any way) wins, which he will, it will be thanks to people like you.

Rasmussen on July 6 showed Rubio slightly ahead.

That was 2 weeks ago.

One week ago Oxendine in the Georgia governor’s race was the frontrunner. Now according to Magellan he has fallen all the way to 4th place.

Do you live in FL? You sure sound like you don’t. Rubio killed AZ-like bills in the FL House. He is pro-amnesty Mel Martinez 2. A Jeb Bush bot like Mel.

Rubio was headed for an easy victory until AZ. He then reminded all the upstate yellow dogs and blue dogs that he is for open-borders. He screwed the pooch.

And don’t lecture me about Spanish/Latin/vowel ended surnames - I know about it a lot more than you do. I am an American. Not a Cuban-American or Irish-American or Latin-American or Dutch-American African-American.

Charlie Crist, Bill Nelson, Meek, Connie Mack are open-border POS too. Crist is the biggest freak going but Rubio needs to be an American politician - sadly he has failed and this is why he is not winning.

I will say one thing - I like Rubio a lot more than I like freak Crist or that POS Connie Mack 3. He is a bigger La Raza POS.

"Check the methodology and bias of your source and you will answer your own question."

DING, DING, DING!!! We have a winner! To the original poster, always check the methodology of any poll which puzzles you. Look at the Dem/Rep/Ind break down. Look at how the question was asked, etc.
