Several factors have aligned to hurt what was once a vibrant and reliable labor market, experts say. In some cases, unemployed older Americans or illegal immigrants have taken the jobs, while an increase in the minimum wage has made it too expensive for some employers to hire teens.
Small says that among a group of 25 friends, only one has found consistent work for the summer... In construction and landscaping, illegal immigrants have pushed teens out of jobs,
Its too expensive for us to hire teens that dont have experience, said Karin Devencenzi... also blames the minimum wage. At $8.40 an hour, Oregon has one of the highest minimum wages in the country.

At 15 I had a trailer behind my bicycle that carried a mower, edger, can and bags of grass. Pedalled around my neighborhood to all my clients and had lots of extra money in HS. Hard work but I could buy cool stuff.
Unlike now. Change=unemployed.
And if you aren't working, how can you be a "worker?"
I'm just asking comrades.
My son’s mowing and weed whipping the neighbor’s lawn this summer for $12.00 an hour. At two hours every five days he’s earning some serious cash for a 13 year old.
There should be no wage controls, period. I started fast food making only $3.15 an hour - but it gave me much-needed customer service and cash handling skills.
I wanted to hire a teenager friend of my son’s to do some work for me in my company. 15 years old. The amount of paperwork to deal with, liability, workermen’s comp, etc. is just not worth it to me.
I suppose I could stop by Home Depot to hire an illegal and be done with it. I imagine that is part of what drives some folks to do that so they don’t have to follow all (any?) of the very cumbersome rules and regulations that the State and Feds have.
They do 20-25 bucks a yard in my neighborhood. We dont have big yards. It takes me 40 minutes with a push mower.
Only rich East Coast elitist assholes believe that. Of course, many are waiting for their unemployment to run out before accepting a job where they actually have to work.
I live at the Jersey shore. Teenagers here used to work on the boardwalk. For many years now only a few get jobs because the owners import workers from other countries. They supply housing & food, what they pay I don’t know. In return they get workers who show up on time & are thrilled to be in the USA. Plus they are polite & look clean cut. I don’t see why kids can’t get jobs if they are willing to babysit or take jobs they really don’t want to do. I think it depends on how bad you need money.
Sounds good maybe they will go get a real job.
I got 3 bucks a yard back in the day. That was 6 burgers according to fast-food economics.
Guess what...my heart pumps purple piss for them...let them go and get honest work for awhile. We have a malignant surplus of liars --er--lawyers--- as it is.
Change? HA!
Hope? bwahahahaha
I just wish the next time I went to a fast food joint someone there could speak english!
When the Dems started jacking up the minimum wage rate in the last few years I just knew it would be counter-productive. They kept hawking that old tired moniker of a ‘living wage’. Crapola—its just entry level jobs that kids need to make a few bucks for summer or PT work. This reduced employment instead of creating jobs. Typical demoRat losers!
five bucks doesn’t cover your gas anymore!
Yeh—i hate that too. Plus they screw up the orders so often too. If you go through drive-thru make sure you check that they gave you your complete order before driving off.
Give me American kids anyday at fast food places.
Bingo. Motivation is everything. I had a young man in my office a year or so ago, who really wanted a special wristwatch that cost over a hundred dollars. I don't know what was so special, but then I'm no teenager any more.
He complained he couldn't find as job, even though he lived in a prosperous middleclass suburb. I knew he lived in a condo development so I asked him, what if you go around to all your neighbors and offer to wash their cars, in place, only using their water, for twenty bucks. Tell them they won't have to waste their time at the car wash ever again.
He did, and had more business than he could handle. There is no shortage of work, if you want to work.
I won't tell him that. LOL Plus, they're probably not 13. It's pretty good money here in the upper midwest.
Here in Hollywood, at Universal Studios, from what I heard from my neighbor who works there...Hispanic kids are pissed off at the large amount of white kids who got the speaking role jobs at the attractions who were not there by seniority from last year. The white kids are pissed off at the hispanic kids who are bitching about their jobs, and accdg to my source are illegals.
Just takes a little creativity & willingness. Ours have done yard work, assisting rentors to clear out a garage, catered a men’s group meeting for a church, put on a “camp” for an 11-y/o displaced friend two separate weekends (fishing for dollars), assistant-teaching a 3-day Logic camp for a homeschoolers’ conference...
