Perhaps, but I do not think the meltdown alone is what did McCain in. He was not doing badly in the polls until he publicly claimed he was suspending his campaign to go back to D.C. and lead the push to pass the bailout. The polls showed overwhelming public opposition to this mess. The GOP House opposed it and supported a free market alternative. Several news articles speculated that McCain was going to get behind their plan before he made such as an issue of leading the charge to push through the Bush plan. When it failed in the House the first time around, he criticized Obama for not showing leadership within his party to push it through. This despite the fact that HE has the one claiming leadership on this issue. After that performance his standing in the polls took a nose dive.
