Learning From Erin
July 26, 2010

Erin’s life was so different from that of most 8-year-olds. While other kids were running and playing and eating ice cream, Erin was lying in a bed being fed through a tube—able to see only the brightest lights and hear only the loudest sounds. Her life consisted of needles and nurses and hospital visits as she battled ongoing illnesses and profound disabilities.

Surrounded by a remarkable family who cared for her with compassion and filled her life with love, Erin died before reaching her ninth birthday.

What can be learned from a precious child like Erin—one who never spoke a word or colored a picture or sang a song? A friend of Erin’s family put it best: “We are all better for having had Erin in our lives. She taught us compassion, unconditional love, and appreciation for the little things.”

Children such as Erin also remind us that this world is not reserved for the perfect, the wealthy, or the athletic. Each person, no matter their physical, mental, or emotional condition, is created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27) and is of equal value and significance. Our Lord has compassion for the weak, the broken, and all He has made (Ps. 145:8-9), and we should mirror that concern (Eph. 5:1-2). Is there an “Erin” in your life you can learn from?

People in whom the world sees no value,
But only as burdens to bear,
Teach us great lessons of God’s sovereign power—
He loves them as treasures so rare. —Carbaugh

Never underestimate the value of one soul.

Read: 1 Cor. 12:21-25

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion. —Psalm 145:8

Good morning, Everyone. Good morning to our

Military, our Allies, and their families.

THANK YOU for all you do.

Thank you, Star, for preparing the Canteen for today’s activities.

BIG salute to Vernon Baker. May he R I P!

DC Metroland weather report

~ Today...Partly cloudy. High 89F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph.

~ Tonight...Mainly clear skies. Low 67F. Winds light and variable.

Whew! Saturday was hotter than an oven. We survived our outing.

We had a heck of a storm roll through yesterday eve. We got a lot of rain and wind but seems northern Maryland got hit pretty good - lots of power outages and trees & limbs down. I'm still looking at different sites to see what areas got hit hardest. I know tornadoes touched down in PA, don't know how bad.

I start my vacation time on Friday so I'll have a short work week. This means I'll have limited time at the Canteen this week and next.

Time for me to make my rounds.
But, you stay right where you are. Cause...............I'll be bock!

Now remember, the Canteen is

Come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS

First Lieutenant Vernon Joseph Baker reminded me about my Dad. My Dad drove trucks in Europe in WWII because of a mangled hand; He could not use a rifle.

I’m white.

My Dad loved Beer, just loved it. When I was 4 foot tall I knew this. Get between my Dad and his Beer; you get Darth Vader on a bad day.

My Dad used the N-word. In my memory, from 1960, it wasn’t a bad word. It meant; a Negro.

My Dad taught me that there were good N’s and bad N’s; just like everybody else.

The guys that rode the back of the garbage truck that picked up trash in our ally were N’s.

My Dad would have these guys in to his garage; at lunch time. To be out of the sun and he would give them a Beer. Beer, Gods gift to man. They were good.
hard men working; just like my Dad. He respected that, I could tell. He gave them Beer, everyday. Beer, blood, beer!

One summer, we broke up a concrete patio. Put all the chunks out in the ally. You’re not supposed to do that.

Dad’s N buddies just started loading it like it was trash. They were not supposed to do that.

As they were driving off, my Dad gave both N’s $10; in 1960?

Corruption, yes, racism, no.

My Dad will be first in line in Club Heaven to buy First Lieutenant Vernon Joseph Baker a Beer!
