I had an image of these criminals trying to break into a house but instead the floor opens up dropping them in a deep pit.

Myself I also approve of an entry corridor that absolutely will not allow the main house door to open unless the outer door is shut, but if the home is under attack both doors clamp down hard denying exit in this reinforced corridor thats lined with ballistic material. Options may include electrical charges or gas submission devices.

I agree with your sentiment, but a more practical approach might be reinforced entry doors, alarm system, large dogs and a weapon within easy reach in every room.
