If my memory from CW reading serves, there were many that were convinced Grant had been drinking heavily during various points during the Vicksburg campaign.

As great of a general as he was, his Presidency probably wasn’t, as the Credit Mobilier scandal may have indicated.

Same management style, different lieutenants. Grant came up with a plan, told his subordinates what needed to be done and let them go about doing it. That worked great with men like Sherman, Sheridan and Thomas. When he got among the political class, and away from soldiers and men of honor, giving his subordinates freedom of action wasn't as good an idea.
