Word is from GoE member Toothless Dawg (He’ll also be there) that CP is meeting at noon at the Amtrak station in the town of Quantico. Not sure how to get there. It looks as if it is within the base limits.

So if CP is not at the main gate try there.

Code Pink will probably protest at the Main Gate.

The MPs are more than just armed, they are very well armed. There is also a very substantial USMC react force as well. In addition, Prince William County has a robust SWAT force and the FBI Academy is about 5 miles away as the crow flies. There will be no problems at the gate.

However, there is a small version of the Iwo Jima Monument just where US Route One intersects Joplin Road (the main gate road). (IIRC, it was a study for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington.) It has a flag and is a popular spot for re-enlistments, wedding pictures, etc. It is government property but mighty exposed to mischief by the unwashed and irreverent. I imagine the Marine Corps will have some security out. Might be a good spot for early arriving FREEPERS as well.

Bring all the water, sun screen, food, umbrellas etc. that you need. All the convenience stores, fast food restaurants, gas stations in the vicinity of the Main Gate have long since been torn down for a US Route 1 expansion project. (As I understand it, there ultimately will be a traffic circle with the monument in the middle - but that’s in the future.)

Anyway, a lot of bare pavement to stand on in the summer sun.

I know..The Globe and Laurel moved south some time ago. That facility has a lot of fond memories for us and me..Rick Spooner takes great care of the Marines! Anyone in the area there should go to his museum of a restaurant. All the Basic School Lt’s ( of which I was one once upon a time) would go there.
Yes the Marines there on the gates will be armed to the teeth..those pinko rats demonstrate at their own peril..

Yes. I remember the old Globe and Laurel well. So much interesting stuff on the walls. Hard to sit down and eat. I haven’t been to the new location yet but I have heard good reports about it.

You know it has been so long since I went to the Basic School (Fox Co. 1978) that I can’t remember if we ever went there as 2ndLts. Visited it a number of times on my last posting at Quantico and in the years since my retirement in 1990. (I’m a MECEP Program officer; one of the first actually.)

In my original post, I said the demonstration is likely to be at the main gate. However, the extract from the Code Pink website (Remember to wash your hands after handling dirty things!) says it will be at the waterfront park in Q’Town.

Wonder how Code Pink will react to all the security. It is sure not going to be like standing out on Georgia Ave. in front of Walter Reed. I’m sure everybody will be very professional. Well, at least the Marines will be.

That is interesting..at the waterfront in QTown..Unless things have changed, you had to go through the main gate down the long picturesque drive to the corner where Little Hall is located and turn left, go across the tracks and down the street. That should be interesting if the entrance is still that way. I would not doubt that there will be a strong Marine presence all over that base.
Yes as Basic School Lts most swooped to DC ( if they had a car) or out in town outside the main gate to the local motel just to get away from the training area. When I went through, the WMs were close to the back gate that took you out to Q Town..some of the buildings are still there..you go under the bridge and up that little hill and then to the right..most of the barracks are gone now except for a brick building on the corner. The Language Branch was there.
Funny story..one of our drill instructors, a tough guy by the name of SSgt Tellings was from the Language b
Branch. One day he spoke to another Marine from the Language Branch and had the chutzpah to criticize the new WM 2nd Lts....his mistake was not knowing that some of them, and one in particular SPOKE FRENCH!! and yes he got ratted out and roundly were his heels locked! The one who ratted him out was an Army Brat who lived in France while her father was stationed there. SWEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT.
Those were the days. ( Oh so you remember the Quantico horse flies?)

Yeah, that's pretty much the way things are today. Some changes in the last 10-12 years though. The Navy clinic out at Hospital Point has been closed. There is a new one on the traffic circle at main side that takes care of active duty and active duty dependents only. (Us retirees use TRICARE off base or use the larger Army and Navy medical centers in the Metro DC area.) The old clinic's extensive physical plant has been taken over by the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), the Corps' primary RD&A branch. Some (but not all) of the greasy spoons in QTown have closed and a number of the old shops have been converted into defense contractor offices so they can be close to their customers at MCSC. Lucas Hall (the "U" shaped brick building down by the dock) was torn down about two years ago to make more parking for the live aboard residents.

Yes as Basic School Lts most swooped to DC (if they had a car) or out in town outside the main gate to the local motel just to get away from the training area. When I went through, the WMs were close to the back gate that took you out to Q Town..some of the buildings are still there..you go under the bridge and up that little hill and then to the right..most of the barracks are gone now except for a brick building on the corner. The Language Branch was there.

Not sure when you went through OCS and TBS, but, from what you write, you might be confusing your OCS experience with TBS.

For example, when I went to OCS in 1976, the women officer candidates where housed exactly where you described - in a set of barracks tucked into that little corner of the base by QTown. A real pain for them to get back and forth to the main OCS site at Brown Field, which, as you know, is on the far side of MCAS. Of course, in addition to all the WWII era buildings that have been torn down, the big change in that area is the multistory Gray Research Center (with very nice WM statue at the front entrance, I might add) located just where you exit from the railroad underpass coming from main side.

In TBS (1978), the unmarried WM officers were billeted in individual rooms (and, IIRC, separate wings of the officer barracks) out at the Basic School. There were only a couple of "mixed" TBS companies per year and the WM officers were organized as a separate platoon within those companies.

When I returned as a Captain in 1986 to do my AWS (now EWS) class work, following graaduation I was sent TAD out to OCS to help with the summer workload. Since I was a logistics officer, I worked as an augmentee in the S-4 office. At the time, there were a number of very nice barracks being built at Brown Field and the last of the old wooden WWII-era temporary barracks were being torn down. (Before they fell down around our ears, that is. You can't say the government didn't get their money's worth out of those structures!) Anyways, by 1986, all the WM OCS candidates were housed in a new barracks just next to the new chow hall; both of which were across the railroad tracks from OCS HQ.

BTW, subsequent to my tour with the S-4 in 1986, a couple more modern barracks have been built at the far end of the parade deck (hard by the high security brig where PFC Manning is presently being held). There is a new armory. And an enclosed elevated walkway was built so the candidates don't have to wait on trains coming to and going from chow. (It is forbidden to march in step on the walkway as it sets up harmonic oscillations in the structure.) Of course, the MAGTF museum that was in all those historic/antique/vintage/ancient aviation buildings along the edge of the parade deck has been shifted out to the National Museum of the Marine Corps just off base by the main gate. Oh, last but not least, all the classrooms and barracks are now icily air conditioned; Praise the Lord!

Funny story..one of our drill instructors, a tough guy by the name of SSgt Tellings was from the Language b Branch.

Funny story. Pretty stupid on the part of the SSgt as well since it would be well within the realm of possibility that one or more of the women would speak French since you were all college attendees/graduates.

(Oh, so you remember the Quantico horse flies?)

Gawd! How could you ever forget them? You know, I never did figure out whether the term "horse" referred to the animals they primarily fed upon or to their apparent size when you saw one on your arm (or better yet, your buddy's arm). And how about being on patrol under double canopy at 100 degrees with 95% humidity? And the battalions of tiger mosquitoes? And the "wait-a-minute" thorn vines? And the fetid mud soup of the Quigley special...I can still remember the taste of it in my mouth and feel the grit in every crease of my body.

Semper Fi.

Can civilians get off at the Amtrak Station in Q-Town? If I understand someone who has researched CP’s protest, they plan on meeting there. They could be taking Amtrak to that station.

Very definitely. Not sure of the fare or the schedules but the Amtrak station is in the town, not on base. (It could be an expensive ride and long wait as the train doesn’t run that frequently on Sundays.)

However, except during periods of high alert, anyone showing up at the gate and saying they are going to QTown is supposed to be let through. They just need to make sure that is were they do go as it is a federal offense to be on the base without authorization. There probably will be security personnel posted along the roadway to ensure no one gets lost. The base surrounds the town on 3 sides. There are gates that can close off access to the base from town. You can expect those gates will be guarded on Sunday, if not closed. The fourth side is bounded by the Potomac River.

The ironic thing is that this “park” is nothing but a nondescript narrow strip of grass about 200’ long running along the river with a small tennis court and a set of picnic tables. There is nothing to act as a symbolic backdrop for their agiprop event. In addition, the brig itself is what? 3-4 miles away.

A better location for ease of access, space, visual backdrop, etc. would have been the main gate. However, since a small replica of the Iwo Jima memorial is there (small as in about 15 feet high on its base), there is also a potential for confrontation with MPs and the police if any attempt at vandalism is attempted. I’m sure security will be thick there as well.

PING and sorry for the short notice.
Could you alert the MCL and any of your H-D friends, please.

We're planning on commadeering the vacant lot across US Rt 1 at Joplin Rd.

Uncle Jimbo is planning on riding down on the same train.
I'd pay money to see that.

I was Assistant MCXO at Quantico from 1977 to late 78 and then sent to HQMC Henderson Hall as MCXO. My husband was the first Director of MCOTEA as an 06. ( All the other services at the time had flag ranks in the OTEA positions).
I went though OCS and WOBC in the summer and fall of 1969 and retired in 1999. We MCX Marines ran our PFT back by the rail road tracks..and our daily runs were from the front of what was then the MCX toward the main gate..beautiful in spring and fall. Once the MPs clocked me ( on a slower day) at 5mph, what a hoot.
Lucas Hall was where Fire Power and MCOTEA was when we were there. The guys would go fishing at noon sometimes.

When I went through the WMs were not married. In fact, until the 1970s if a WM got married she had to get out of the Corps! Later that changed BUT if a WM married a civilian the civilian husband was not given dependent status and they would not even be permitted base housing. When I was overseas (71-73 WM Officers were on the “all others tour”) an officer in another service who was going to be forced out due to pregnancy took her case to the Supreme Court..the premise was if she had to get out so did the father or it was discrimination. So many things changed. So did the rank..when I first came in a WM could only achieve the rank of LtCol. The Director of Woman Marines ( which is a position which no longer exists) would be appointed Colonel. AS we have seen, we now have Women Marines who are flag rank.( I sound like a fossil LOL

Oh, back to the OCS and WOBC..we were in one set of barracks in OCS of the open squadbay type. In WOBC we were relocated within that same area where it was then two to a room.

The drill field we used was Breckenridge Drill Field ( actually now a huge parking lot where Command and Staff is held etc) but we would fall out there and drill. And if one of those horse flies ( there was a horse stable not far from us) landed on you and bit you you were to stand there and take it..not flinch or brush it off. That is until I got a big huge red welt on my leg that looked really nasty..they, in order to avoid infections, we were allowed to brush them off discreetly.

The heat and humidity of Quantico was something to experience. Since the Code Pinkers are there causing a ruckus I hope it is especially muggy just for them. Let the horse flies loose too! Ah home week!
