Since I don't trust Farah at all, it would not be hard for me to believe that he never intended to actually have Ann appear. He could use her name to promote it until he had to make the final payment. Casper the ghost? No, he made them to the speaker’s bureau, the intermediary responsible for communication about and scheduling of the event. In the ordinary course of business contracts, people don’t pay for a product they don’t believe they will get.
Therefore, Farah had to believe, based at minimum on communication with the agency, she had agreed to the job, else why would he have sent out those installments? And if they were acting in good faith as her agent, she had already represented her willingness to do the speech by accepting the first installment.
