Should have been carrying a .357 or larger so he could have shot thru the door and killed the perp

Di not count on it going through the door or if it does emerging with enough velocity and integrity of the the slug to drop the perp. The good guy did good considering the circumstances with the exception of not emptying his pistol into the perp. However, if he did they probably would have had a murder charge that would stick. In Texas he could have emptied the pistol and walk.
