Does God Belong at The Lincoln Memorial?
politicsdaily.com ^ | Aug. 29, 2010 | Matt Lewis

On Sunday's episode of CNN's 'Reliable Sources,' Bill Press, Jane Hall and I joined host Howard Kurtz to debate and discuss Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally.

Press -- whom I like personally (and who has previously appeared on my podcast), made what were (in my estimation) the most controversial comments of the day.

First, he argued it was inappropriate for Glenn Beck to invoke religion at the Lincoln Memorial, saying, "I thought I was at a camp meeting -- an old fashioned, religious camp meeting; I don't think that's appropriate on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial."

(Of course, the irony is that Lincoln frequently referenced The Almighty -- and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was, of course, was a man of God.)

Next, Kurtz challenged Press' notion that allowing Beck to speak at The Lincoln Memorial was "like granting al Qaeda permission to hold a rally on September 11 - at Ground Zero."

Yes, for those who believe.

Those who don’t can ignore it.

al Qaeda is the new Nazi - the left really doesn’t believe what they did was as bad as it was, but if you oppose the left, you are one.

Do the people who write these things ever research anything? Does he believe Lincoln to have been a famous atheist who would have preferred religion be kept from his memorial? Of course, had Beck been a Muslim, I’m sure it would have been OK!!!

Our founding fathers and Presidents (including Lincoln) were men of faith who would NEVER have questioned their right to speak out on such matters publicly. The sad fact is that we have been silenced ABOUT OUR FAITH and yesterday was a cry to start speaking out again. Can you imagine how things would change for the better if we had more intense conversations about God, about the Bible, that we would carry Bibles out in the public places. When we eat out my husband and I and our kids (ages 23, 21) always pray outloud no matter where we are.

Let God arise and His enemies be scattered. Who are these fools that think they can tell God where He belongs or not.

For Glenn Beck I pray that His promise that where ever the soles of his shoes will tread God gives it to him as a possession.

Seriously? Our natural born rights, set forth in the bill of rights and reiterated by Lincoln with the emancipation proclimation, were derived from God. Our founders themselves spoke of this. They more apt question is...do muslims belong at ground zero? Photobucket

I’m sure Lincoln was a Christian. I’m also sure he prayed a lot. If Lincoln is represented in a memorial, why would we ever think it plausible to leave out his beliefs?

“Excuse me, didn’t MLK invoke prayer at the memorial”?

Is it necessary that any one should [ask], “Did General Washington avow himself to be a believer in Christianity?" As well may we question his patriotism, his heroic devotion to his country. His mottos were, "Deeds, not Words"; and, "For God and my Country."

Nelly Custis-Lewis (Washington’s adopted daughter)

“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”

George Washington.

“What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.”

George Washington. [speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs May 12, 1779]

"To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian"

George Washington. [May 2, 1778, at Valley Forge]

The fact that the event took place at the replica of the temple of Zeus is worrisome.

Did he criticize MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech, too, in which the good doctor said:

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."

* * *

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

The proof that God exists and has written it on the hearts of men is found in the opposition to the things referencing God. If there is no God, or if He’s not involved in the things of this world, then the gathering on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial was just pure silliness - the ultimate example of futility.

We know that men are suppressors of truth. The truth is obvious in natural revelation alone, but the Gospel brings responsibility to the individual to confess sin, repent of it, and believe upon Jesus Christ as the only hope of salvation.

These words are foolishness to the world, and rather than dismiss them, they fight them. They don’t want to be held accountable.

A true atheist or agnostic will not attempt to convert anyone, for what is the difference? A suppressor of truth - who secretly knows the truth but hates it - will.

Is this a trick question?

“No, President Lincoln appealed to the principles of materialistic atheism to support the union of the states and oppose slavery.”
