Lady Gaga and the death of sex
The Sunday Times ^ | 09/11/10 | Camille Paglia

Posted on 09/11/2010 7:52:31 PM PDT by AtlasStalled

Lady Gaga is the first major star of the digital age. * * * [D]espite showing acres of pallid flesh in the fetish-bondage garb of urban prostitution, Gaga isn’t sexy at all – she’s like a gangly marionette or plasticised android. How could a figure so calculated and artificial, so clinical and strangely antiseptic, so stripped of genuine eroticism have become the icon of her generation? Can it be that Gaga represents the exhausted end of the sexual revolution? In Gaga’s manic miming of persona after persona, over-conceptualised and claustrophobic, we may have reached the limit of an era…

oh, she’ll be lonely alright

she may have plenty of scum-sucking users hanging around her, so long as the money lasts, but she’ll be lonely and truly a-lone through it all

I wouldn’t touch her, even with somebody else’s 10 foot pole!

Shakira was pretty too. Her new look was a downgrade also.

Am I the only person to hear that she says the “F” word 8 or 9 times in this song? Listen with headphones on - “Pa-pa-pa- Poker Face - Pa-pa F*** her face. Shouldn’t she be fined by the FCC or something? Just wondrin’...

Nah, I ain’t hearing that. They even zoom in and you can see her mouth the words Pa-Pa-Pa. Believe me, in today’s society, if she wanted to drop the f-bomb, she’d do it.

That wasn't readable. It's too catty. Camille is a resentful leftist. This is why leftist talk radio doesn't work. 2 minutes of bile envy is all someone can stomach.

My impressions:...

You have to remember. We live in an age where every performance is enhanced digitally. If the people that revere her went to see a live performance without the strobe lights and accompanying enhancements they would probably go, "Huh?!?!?".

She's making money because she is selling something that has been marketed before it was made.

Today's entertainment world is so bereft of talent I listen to an Oldies station when I do listen to music on the radio.

If you search YouTube for Stefani Germanotta, there are some videos of her pre-GaGa days. She's actually got some musical chops; her style is somewhere on the continuum between not quite as jazzy as Norah Jones nor quite as R&B as Alicia Keys.

My teenage daughter had me watch one of them; she *is* good, and she writes her own music, too. I took my daughter to her concert- she performed live, and broke out one of her pop songs into a ballad while playing the piano. The concert may not have been everyone's style, but has more natural talent than a lot of other pop stars out there (more than Madonna did; I don't think she is quite as ruthless as Madonna, even if ambitious, as well).

If you're referring to Lady Gaga, I wouldn't call her a skank, just a mildly talented person, who likes to act out. Of course, she is considered HUGELY talented by her fans, many of whom are tween and teen girls, who are just amazed that anyone wouldn't like her.

From what I've seen, Lady Gaga loves 'the showbiz', and the attempts to shock, just like Madonna, before her

All our media lead to Gaga. I happen to like her sneer at media and its contrivances. And I like Camille, but honey, Gaga is an artist and Madonna is a pop star. Gaga is out popping Madonna but is actually able to play piano as a virtuoso would. Madonna could not, she can barely dance. V’s wife.

I beg to differ, Laz. She is a uniquely talented individual poking fun at herself and all of us. Very few current artists could sit down and pull off a live number like this. Her little idiosyncracies are the way she is creating her particular style...
