The Bay State race that could capture national attention kicks off today with Republican state Rep. Jeffrey Perry facing Democrat Norfolk District Attorney William Keating in what promises to be a knock-down, drag-out contest for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. William Delahunt.
A fired-up Perry came out of his corner with fighting words last night.
Were taking back our government starting right now, Perry told supporters at Plimouth Plantation, pledging to be a vote against Obamacare, to cut federal spending and to halt illegal immigration. The Sandwich representative, who bested former state Treasurer Joe Malone, Cohasset accountant Raymond Kasperowicz and Hanover lawyer Robert Hayden in the primary, vowed to help topple the Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill.
I will be part of a wave sweeping across this country of 39 or more Republicans wholl remove Nancy Pelosi from the speakers chair, he declared.
Keating, who topped Barnstable state Sen. Robert OLeary in a hard-fought Democratic bout, hit his own populist notes, promising to battle Washington pols beholden to big oil and fight attempts to raise the age for Social Security.
To every man, woman and child in the 10th district who wants to fix Washington, this victory belongs to you, Keating said.
The stakes of this campaign are high, Keating said.
The national GOP has targeted Massachusetts 10th district as one of several nationwide ripe for turnover. There are currently no Republican House members from New England.
